With Pakistan's 77th Independence Day approaching on August 14 and South Asian Heritage Month focusing on #Pakistan starting August 11, we have a unique opportunity for both celebration and introspection. This month allows us to honour our vibrant South Asian and Pakistani heritage while also addressing important issues within our community. Acknowledging that not everything we do is beneficial is essential for genuine growth. Critically examining our beliefs and behaviours while reflecting on and challenging double standards is crucial for meaningful progress. Last year, I highlighted critical issues such as colourism, anti-Blackness, and gender violence. Today, I want to draw attention to another vital topic: the protection and respect of minority rights. Quaid-e-Azam emphasised the importance of these rights in his historic speech on August 11, 1947. He assured that everyone would be free to worship in their chosen places, stating, "You are free; you are free to go to your temples; free to go to your mosques or any other places of worship in the State of Pakistan." The white portion of our flag symbolises our commitment to these principles. Despite these foundational ideals, challenges remain in ensuring that all minorities receive the respect and protection they deserve. We must unite in advocating for a society where everyone, regardless of ethnicity or religion, can live free from fear, discrimination, persecution, religious intolerance, and extermination. Consistency in our advocacy is crucial. Just as we call for justice and action for Palestine, we should also stand in solidarity with marginalised communities within our own borders and amplify their voices—we cannot afford to look away. Numerous NGOs and advocacy groups work tirelessly to promote and protect minority rights, offering support, legal aid, and raising awareness. It is time for us to come together and support these efforts. Standing up against injustices, both locally and globally, is essential for building a just and equitable society—for everyone, not just those who look like us or share our values. Jashan-e-Azaadi Mubarak to all those celebrating this month! #PakistanIndependenceDay #SouthAsianHeritageMonth #Reflection

As the world observes the UN International Day of Non-violence, let's read what Ms. Tracey Campbell, Canada, has to say about it: "The principle of non-violence — also known as non-violent resistance — rejects the use of physical violence in order to achieve social or political change. Often described as 'the politics of ordinary people," this form of social struggle has been adopted by mass populations all over the world in campaigns for social justice. Establishing a culture of peace and sustainable development is at the heart of UNESCO’s mandate. UNESCO shares knowledge, data, and expertise to strengthen global coordination in the fields of education, the sciences, culture, communication, and information, supporting all Member States in the face of current global challenges." Esra'a Al Shafei (b. 1986) is a pioneering Bahraini human rights activist and the visionary founder of Majal, a network of digital platforms that amplify the voices of marginalised communities across the Middle East and North Africa. Growing up in a region where freedom of expression is often suppressed, Esra’a recognised the transformative power of the internet early on. She harnessed this potential to create safe spaces where silenced voices could be heard, and where stories of injustice, resistance, and hope could be shared globally. Through Majal’s various platforms—ranging from music sites to blogs—Esra'a has built a digital ecosystem that not only preserves these voices but also empowers them. Her work is a testament to how technology can bridge gaps and create a more inclusive narrative, challenging the status quo in societies where dissent is dangerous. "Never let go of your authentic self, even if it must be in hiding for now. Protect it like a lit match in the wind. Don’t let fear blow it out," Esra'a's advise also reflects her unwavering commitment to maintaining and nurturing one's true identity, even in the face of adversity. Esra’a doesn't show her face online, as it would put her and her family at risk if she were recognisable. Despite facing this level of threat and censorship, she continues to fight for the fundamental right of expression, demonstrating that digital activism is a powerful tool for preserving cultural narratives and advancing human rights. Her courage and resilience encapsulates her unwavering commitment to ensuring that the voices of the marginalised are not only preserved, but also amplified. By spotlighting contemporary voices like Esra'a Al Shafei, Future Archaeologies hope to support her cause and help preserve today’s marginalised narratives by ensuring they shape the future. Please help support and protect the work of digital activists on networks such as Majal, as it will help ensure their contributions continue to influence the world for generations to come. #EsraaAlShafei #DigitalRights #HumanRights #CulturalPreservation #FutureArchaeologies #FutureVoices #majal

Title: Highlighting the Plight of Pashtuns: A Call for Justice and Equality In a deeply insightful article published by the Asian Human Rights Commission, Kahar Zalmay sheds light on the harrowing reality faced by the Pashtun community in Pakistan. Titled "The Case of Pashtun Genocide in the Country," Zalmay's piece meticulously outlines the systematic marginalization and violence inflicted upon Pashtuns, drawing parallels to the definition of genocide as outlined by the UN. Zalmay articulates the profound struggles of the Pashtun people, from cultural stigmatization to physical violence, exacerbated by state policies and media portrayal. He emphasizes the historical and ongoing injustices, citing examples of military operations, targeted killings, and the negative stereotyping perpetuated by mainstream media. His narrative underscores the urgent need for awareness, empathy, and action to address the deep-seated issues faced by Pashtuns. This article serves as a stark reminder of the resilience of the Pashtun community amidst adversity and a call to action for justice and equality. As we reflect on Zalmay's compelling words, let us recognize the importance of standing against discrimination and advocating for the rights of marginalized communities. 🔗 [Read the full article] (https://lnkd.in/ddpBQ-XT) #PashtunRights #HumanRights #SocialJustice #Equality #PashtunGenocide #KaharZalmay #AHRC

I'm happy to announce an internal transition of my position at Rights and Resources Initiative. During the second half of 2024, I will be transitioning fully to the RRI Gender Justice program, and we will be recruiting a new director of Latin America program in the coming months. I will be present to support as advisor. Since 2020 I was entrusted to resume the leadership of the global Gender Justice program, which has meant that I have been fulfilling a dual role since then at two different scales. It has been an enormous task and with satisfaction I can see that this effort is creating strong roots and fruits that need greater attention. There is great potential that needs to be expanded and consolidated in the Gender Justice program. All this thanks to the effort we are developing with the grassroots women's movement of Indigenous Peoples, Afro-descendants and local communities in Africa, Asia, and Latin America. In 2009, I came to RRI to expand and strength the RRI coalition in Latin America. I must say that it has been a road full of personal and professional satisfaction for the mere fact of having been able to travel this time and geography in the company of many grassroots organizations, leaders from communities and crucial allies. The road is still long with many points to consolidate and adjust. The challenges we have encountered, we have overcome them together and the doors that seemed never to open, we have managed to unbolt them. We have a regional coalition of mostly community-based organizations representing the diversity of peoples and women and youth in Latin America and the Caribbean; we have valuable allies from national and international non-governmental organizations accompanying us, research centers and academia contributing with their expertise to the organized movement of communities and Indigenous and Afro-descendant Peoples and local communities, as well as organizations and groups of women and youth throughout the region. We have established long-term vision and agendas in defense of community land and territorial rights. We have set many milestones of change that are producing enormous results.
