After an amazing 25 years with Dell Technologies, (102 quarters, but who’s counting), Friday April 26th marked my last day. I am filled with gratitude for all the experiences and relationships forged over that time. As I reflect, I am reminded of one key takeaway - higher possibilities emerge in the relentless pursuit of excellence. At what seemed like a low point in my career, some important advice I received echoed this takeaway: "Just be the best." This was a gut-check moment. What I've come to understand is that we have a choice to pursue excellence or allow mediocrity - there seems to be no gray area. Mediocrity happens when we resist change and seek the comfort of the known. Pursuing excellence puts us in a constant state of transformation and challenges us to get comfortable being uncomfortable while stepping into the unknown. It involves letting go of what no longer serves the pursuit and fully embracing something new that does. Excellence is never attained, only strived for. And while short-term failure is a possibility, growth is assured. I've had the good fortune to experience this pursuit with Dell many times. Dell-run manufacturing, close to customers, custom-build-to-order and selling direct were all foundational to Dell’s business model. Transforming the business model by leveraging OEMs, pre-building to stock, and leveraging channel sales were each gut-check moves that involved massive process, technology, and cultural transformation. Not to mention, going private, completing the largest (and arguably the most successful) tech merger in history, and going public again, among many others. All were uncomfortable, daunting, and difficult. Yet each opened Dell to become more competitive, offer a more complete customer experience and continue to grow, all while staying true to its core. Going through this as a team member and leader at Dell has shown me that "being the best" has less to do with competing with others and everything to do with striving toward excellence with others. The most effective way I have found to find my own edge is to inspire others to find theirs. Results are meaningless without the relationships that brought them to bear. The rewards for all your troubles in the pursuit of excellence - deeper, richer, and more meaningful relationships. And relationships forged in the fire of transformation will endure. I am excited about what the future holds and will share my next step soon. Thank you to Dell, its customers, partners, shareholders, and team members - all the best for continued success!
