Menstrual health transcends beyond a mere health concern; it is a human rights issue. The ability to manage menstruation with dignity is a crucial aspect of bodily autonomy, yet millions globally lack access to essential menstrual products and adequate facilities. This year’s Menstrual Hygiene Day theme, “Together for a #PeriodFriendlyWorld,” underscores the urgency of addressing this widespread challenge. Women and girls with disabilities face compounded barriers when it comes to menstrual health. They are often marginalized in discussions on sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR), face societal exclusion, and lack adequate resources and support. These challenges are magnified by gender inequality, poverty, and cultural stigmas, which can severely impact their social and economic participation. This Labor Day, we honor the tenacity, fortitude, and invaluable contributions of women workers around the globe. As we honor their unshakable dedication, it's imperative to raise awareness of the specific challenges they face, especially with regard to workplace hygiene and menstruation health. Did you know that millions of women labourers face significant barriers when it comes to accessing adequate menstrual hygiene products and facilities at their workplaces? According to a report by UNICEF, insufficient menstrual hygiene management adversely impacts the productivity, health, and dignity of countless women globally. In India, where women constitute approximately 23.3% of the labour force, according to the latest data from the Periodic Labour Force Survey (PLFS) conducted by the National Statistical Office (NSO), the National Family Health Survey (NFHS-5) underscores the persistent challenges surrounding access to menstrual hygiene products for many working women. Project Baala is committed to addressing these challenges head-on. By providing access to menstrual products, promoting comprehensive menstrual health education, and advocating for inclusive workplace policies, we aim to create supportive environments where women can work with dignity, comfort, and equality. This Labour Day, let's reiterate our dedication to gender equality in the workforce and ensure that every woman, regardless of her profession, has the resources and support she needs to thrive. Today, May 28th, is Menstrual Hygiene Day. First celebrated in 2014, this annual awareness day highlights the importance of proper menstrual hygiene management around the globe. 🌎🌍🌏 According to unicef.org, approximately 1.8 billion people menstruate every month, including women, girls, transgender men, and non-binary individuals. (UNWomen.org has that number at up over 2 billion.) "Gender inequality, discriminatory social norms, cultural taboos, poverty, and lack of basic services like toilets and sanitary products can all cause menstrual health and hygiene needs to go unmet." Menstrual Hygiene Day advocates against the stigmas, exclusion, and discrimination that often come with having a menstrual cycle, promoting change and access to proper menstrual products and education FOR ALL. According to menstrualhygieneday.org, "It’s not acceptable that because of a natural bodily function women and girls continue to be prevented from getting an education, earning an income, and fully and equally participating in everyday life." This year's theme is #PeriodFriendlyWorld. "In a #PeriodFriendlyWorld, the stigma and taboo surrounding menstruation are history. It is a world where everyone can access the products, education, and infrastructure they need. From all over the world, we stand, we work, we fight together for a #PeriodFriendlyWorld." 💙 #menstrualhealth #menstrualhygiene #menstrualhygieneday #myperiod #mycycle #pmdd #pms #pme #menstrualequality #womenshealth #afabindividuals #humanrights #hellweek #makeadifference #menstrualproducts #pmddawareness #pmddadvocacy #womensrights #transgender #unicef #inclusion #equalityforall #pink

Why do you think it is important for men and boys to understand menstrual health? This is a question I got to ask in my class. My male learner had so many responses on this but surprisingly, they were all disagreeing and reasoning that they do not have to understand menstrual health because it doesn't concern them in any way. As we strive for gender equality, it's crucial to recognize the significance of educating men and boys about menstrual hygiene. Understanding this aspect of women's health not only fosters empathy and support but also promotes inclusivity and empowerment. Here's why it matters: 1. Breaking Stigma. Menstruation is often shrouded in stigma and taboo, leading to misinformation and discomfort. By educating men about menstrual hygiene, we break down these barriers and create a more open and supportive environment for everyone. 2. Supportive Relationships. Whether it's a partner, friend, or family member, men play an integral role in supporting the women in their lives. Knowledge about menstrual hygiene enables them to offer meaningful support, from providing access to hygiene products to offering emotional support during menstruation. 3. Health Awareness. Menstrual hygiene isn't just about cleanliness; it's also about health. Understanding the importance of proper hygiene practices can help prevent infections and other health issues, ensuring the well-being of women and girls. 4. Empathy and Understanding. Empathy is key to building strong relationships and fostering a more compassionate society. By educating men about menstruation, we cultivate empathy and understanding, creating a more inclusive and supportive community for everyone. Let's work together to promote awareness and understanding of menstrual hygiene among men and boys around us so that we can effectively contribute to a more equitable and compassionate world for all. #MenstrualHygiene #GenderEquality #Empowerment #HealthAwareness #Empathy
