🌍💧 This week, CEOs of the Water, Peace & Security (WPS) Partnership — IHE Delft Institute for Water Education, Deltares, HCSS - The Hague Centre for Strategic Studies, World Resources Institute, International Alert, and Wetlands International — met to reiterate their commitment to the partnership. Eddy Moors, Rector at IHE Delft, said: "It is becoming increasingly clear that the climate and water challenges we face are making the work of the WPS partnership invaluable. Together, we strive to turn cycles of water-related conflict into cycles of cooperation on water, through dialogue, training, and awareness."   The Water, Peace and Security (WPS) Partnership uses advanced technology to address the global water crisis and its impact on communities, ecosystems, and security. Founded in 2018, WPS creates tools that assist in identifying and mitigating water-related security risks. By fostering awareness and understanding, we support proactive measures in vulnerable regions like Mali, Iraq, Ethiopia, and Kenya. Our efforts aim to not only prevent water tension from escalating into conflict but also to transform water challenges into collaborative peacebuilding opportunities. Water is a finite resource that is fundamental to human life. In the OSCE region alone, more than 150 rivers and lakes are shared between two or more participating States, also making water management a national and regional security issue. Today, I opened the Economic and Environmental Dimension Implementation Meeting here at the Hofburg in Vienna. This meeting provides an invaluable opportunity to take stock of what we’ve committed to and what we’ve achieved each year within the economic and environmental dimensions of our work. With this year’s focus on water management, it presents an opportunity to dive into our work on promoting the sustainable use of water resources - from transboundary water co-operation and water diplomacy to good water governance – and evaluate what more needs to be done. Water management is a great challenge of our time. But it also represents an opportunity. 🚰💧Water is often seen as source of conflict. Yet research shows that time and again, otherwise conflicting parties are prepared to cooperate on water security. So important is access to essence of life. If cooperation on water is possible, then could it be used as an entry point to broader peacebuilding? Today #1954HagueConvention turns 70! #ProcultherNet joins the celebrations, meet us in The Hague on 14 and 15 May at the Networking Agora parallel to the UNESCO Conference “Cultural Heritage and Peace: Building on 70 years of UNESCO Hague Convention for the Protection of Cultural Property in the Event of Armed Conflict”. We are sharing the knowledge and tools developed within #Proculther(2019-2021) and #ProcultherNet (2022-2023) and unveil the forthcoming actions foreseen within the current initiative PROCULTHER-NET 2 (2024-2025). #GROUND FOR #PEACE - #Land #Restoration for #International #Peace and #Security - For more than three billion people, land is core to their survival, wellbeing, and dignity. However, with between 20–40% of total global land area degraded or degrading, many are seeing this vital resource disappear before their eyes. As a result, competition and disputes over access to and use of land are increasing and becoming prominent in many conflicts. At the same time, conflicts increase the fragility of the institutions, essential services, infrastructure and governance that are critical for strengthening resilience to a changing climate and environment. This report sets the political case for land restoration as a powerful route towards international peace and security, identifies key enablers for land restoration to promote cooperation between countries, and outlines recommendations to elevate the land, peace and security agenda and secure more and better financing.

On this World Water Day, as we focus on this year's theme, 'Leveraging Water for Peace,' we honor not just the essential aspect of water but also its capacity to promote peace and cooperation between nations.🚰 By ensuring equitable access, managing resources sustainably, and fostering dialogue and cooperation, we can harness the transformative power of water to build bridges rather than barriers.
