🚨 The EU countries consume more cellulose than they produce, and this growing demand is creating new business opportunities for some — while resulting in loss for others. A new cross-border investigation reveals that land grabbing in Mozambique is fuelled by the European demand for eucalyptus pulp. 👩🏽💻 In addition to fieldwork, the team — Davide Mancini, Boaventura Monjane and Juan Maza Calleja, mentored by Fiona Macleod — looked into the official data, academic investigations, authorities and company reports, working contracts and land concession contracts with the help of national and international civil society actors. 🧐 Experts say that large-scale eucalyptus plantations in Mozambique, often established without proper land compensation, represent a form of "green colonialism," where climate change policies mask exploitation of local resources and communities. ❗Eucalyptus trees are a particularly damaging choice as these trees absorb significant amounts of water, causing nearby wells to dry up. 💧 Imagine turning the tap and not one drop of water comes out: you can’t drink, cook or even wash your hands. Or worse still, imagine a hospital with no clean water, where infections are multiplying and even the most basic care is impossible.   According to the United Nations Global Compact, over a third of the world’s population currently lives in countries with water scarcity. That number is expected to rise to two thirds in 2025 and by 2030 it is thought that 700 million people could be displaced by intense water scarcity.    📅 This week, the World Water Week in Stockholm has highlighted the importance of international cooperation to ensure universal access to water and sanitation, under the slogan “Bridging Borders: Water for a Peaceful and Sustainable Future”. 🤝   Tolsa has joined this global commitment, focussing on our sustainable mining model and our CSR initiatives.   We were pioneers in obtaining certification for sustainable mining in Spain and in 2023 we extended this to Senegal, with Tolsa being the first company to implement the standard in West Africa.   Our sustainable mining model certifies the fact that our mining activity is largely non-invasive, with minimal environmental impact.   We do not generate waste of any kind as there are no physical or chemical treatments in our operations, besides a superficial variation to the soil, which we return to its original use at the end of our activity.   Also, in line with SDG 6, which states that, “The company must ensure the sustainable management of water resources in creating its products and services”, we continue to make advances in using water more efficiently and responsibly. For example, at our Madrid facilities, we save an estimated 20% in water consumption in our micronization line and cooling towers.   In regard to our CSR initiatives in Senegal and Turkey, we help provide access to drinking water in the communities where we operate, working alongside the infrastructure entities needed to accomplish this, thereby reaffirming our commitment to a future where every drop counts. 🌍 #Sustainability #CircularEconomy #EveryDropCounts #WaterSaving

🌍 The Water Positive Think Tank Returns to Chile! 🌍 This November 6th and 7th, the ALADYR International Congress in Santiago is the epicenter of a water revolution, gathering minds committed to a Water Positive Future. 🌊 This conference dives deep into the heart of Chile's pressing challenges with water scarcity and insecurity—issues that ripple across human health, agriculture, and industry. In his opening remarks, Gerald "Jerry" Ross, ALADYR President, ignited the room with his powerful insight: "Our biggest challenge is not the lack of water, but our ability to weave agreements." 🧩 It's a call for collaboration across public and private sectors, stressing that the answers to water scarcity aren't found in technology alone but in unified action and mutual commitment. Ross praised Chile's mining industry as an example of adaptation and resilience, achieving some of the world's highest water-use efficiencies through recirculation and desalination. "Perhaps this is the way forward for all sectors, including agriculture and health supply," he said, pushing the audience to think beyond traditional approaches. With this congress as a safe space for innovation, Ross encouraged attendees to be bold, irreverent, and solutions-focused. Rejuvenating the ecosystem of the Reventazón river basin in Costa Rica is crucial to protecting the region’s supply of water, food and energy from the impacts of climate change and land degradation. The basin supplies the region’s eight hydropower dams, as well as providing San Jose, the capital city, with 25% of its drinking water. The Reventazón region is also a productive agricultural area, supplying 85% of the country’s vegetable crops. Nature also thrives in the 25 protected wilderness areas around the basin, including more than 250,000 hectares of forests which play a fundamental role in protecting water resources. Restoring the ecosystem is crucial to stabilize hydrology and ensure a reliable water and energy supply. ▪️How much resource extraction and waste generation is associated with economic activity in Aotearoa New Zealand today? ▪️How much might that resource and waste footprint increase over the coming decades in response to population, the economy and other drivers? These two critical questions are the focus of a new investigation now underway by the PCE. As a first step in this enquiry, the Commissioner has released a literature review which surveys and summarises all that is currently known about resource use and waste generation in New Zealand. The review also identifies gaps in current data and makes suggestions as to how to fill those gaps. More work is coming on this important topic, so watch this space. Water scarcity is a growing reality for many, and Mexico is no exception. With increasing pressure on water resources, the Mexican government has launched a new National Water Plan 2024-2030 to address the growing challenge. The Mexican government has unveiled a new National Water Plan recently signed into law by President Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo and the National Water Commission (Conagua (Comisión Nacional del Agua)), as well as other key stakeholders. The water plan is a comprehensive strategy designed to ensure sustainable water management and equitable access for all citizens. It officially recognises water as a human right, setting the stage for Mexico's more sustainable and equitable water future. 🔒 The plan prioritises long-term water security for all Mexicans, focusing on sustainable resource management and infrastructure development. 💧 The plan aims to bridge the gap in water access by addessing inequality in underserved communities and promoting equitable distribution. 💰 The strategy encourages investment in innovative water technologies like desalination and wastewater treatment to optimise water use. 🤝 The plan underscores the importance of collaboration between government agencies, private entities, and civil society to achieve its goals.
