Excited to share a video of our dugout work in Ghana which completed last month! We are proud to have supported our local partner Saha Global, to expand & rehabilitate a large water dugout close to the village of Sinsina which has been drying out for several months at a time in recent years due to climate change. Having the dugout expanded hopefully means that: 💧 clean drinking water will be supplied to Sinsina residents all year round 🚶♀️ women & children will no longer have to walk long distances to source clean water when the dugout is dry 🙋♀️ children can stay in school & women can focus on other important activities to support their families Saha Global have not undertaken such work on dugouts before, so we are delighted to have funded this pilot. We are aiming to renovate five more dugouts in Ghana between now and 2027 – if you’d like to support this work please get in touch, we’d love to hear from you. Today we are sharing a short clip - watch the full video (5 minutes) at https://lnkd.in/dcMzqaCi #Ghana #waterharvest #sahaglobal #SDG6 #SDG2 #SDG4 #SDG1 #SDG3 #SDG13 #rainwaterharvesting #water #WaterSanitationandHygiene #climatechange #innovation

🌱 Mangroves & Livelihoods: A Balancing Act in Anyanui, Ghana 🇬🇭 Did you know that mangrove logging is a primary income source for communities in Anyanui, but it comes at a high cost. The loss of mangroves exposes these coasts to climate risks such as flooding, erosion and storm surges, creating a detrimental cycle that threatens both livelihoods and the environment. Enter the Voluntary Community Mangrove Carbon Credit (VCMCC) project on a mission to fix this: Ocean Risk and Resilience Action Alliance project partners, The University of Education in Winneba-Ghana (UEW - School of Business) and Hen Mpoano are working with the Government of Ghana to empower farmers to switch from logging to sustainable practices like beekeeping and clam/oyster farming. With funding from the UK’s Blue Planet Fund through ORRAA, this project will support over 300 people and protect 3,368 hectares of mangroves. 🙌 Together, we’re laying the groundwork for a resilient future for the community and wetlands of Ghana! 🌍 Learn more here: https://lnkd.in/eVMxBRPp #SustainableIncome #CoastalCommunities #MangroveRestoration

#DidYouKnow? 500,000+ estimated acres of forests are cut annually throughout Uganda. This is an equivalent of deforesting 43 football fields every hour. At this rate, it is estimated that by 2050, there will be no forests outside of protected areas remaining in Uganda. It is such alarming figures that prompted Uganda Breweries to start the Running Out of Trees (ROOTs) campaign as a public-private sector tree planting initiative to plant more trees. We have partnered with the Ministry of Water and Environment, Tree Adoption Uganda, Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA), MTN Uganda, TotalEnergies, Stanbic Bank Uganda, Roofings Group, National Water & Sewerage Corporation (NWSC), and MOGAS among others to push it forward. The ROOTs Campaign was launched in February 2020 as a 5-year project geared towards soliciting commitments from the private sector to support Government’s initiative to restore forest cover. The campaign has so far ensured the planting of over 20 million trees. We believe that there is so much to gain from a smiling environment.

Providing access to clean and safe water sustainably is the way to go. This not only leverages the efforts towards the realisation of SDG 6 but also improvement in the living conditions of the most underserved communities.
Our WASH projects across #EastAfrica are providing communities with sustainable access to clean water every day. 💧 Recently, our Regional Director, Leah Kaguara visited Mayuge District, Uganda, to inspect a newly constructed motorized borehole system—one of WaterAid’s latest projects, now serving the local community. Thanks to our partnerships and community-driven initiatives, we are ensuring this project remains sustainable for years to come. #WaterAid #EveryonesBusiness #WASH4ALL #CleanWater #SustainableDevelopment WaterAid Rwanda WaterAid Tanzania WaterAid Ethiopia WaterAid Uganda

47 million people live within the Zambezi watercourse, one of the world’s largest freshwater catchments. The Zambezi provides vital ecosystem services that support food security, economic development, and community resilience. This precious balance is threatened by #climatechange, but nature-based solutions can help. CIF supports five countries of the Zambezi region that have joined up to preserve the river and the communities that depend on it. Bordering South Luangwa National Park in Zambia, nestled deep in the forest, #CarbonCreditsWork to fight climate change and help the residents of Malama Chiefdom build schools that are safe from animals and the elements. Join us in sharing the below story of Emmanuel Zulu, one of the 228,000 people in some of Zambia’s most impoverished provinces who are part of the Luangwa Community Forests Project to make #CarbonCreditsWork to create a safe climate future. “For us, it is very real. We put up wire fences with tins on (to hear them coming) to prevent elephants from crop-raiding at night, but during the day we often find them near the school and on our commute. The hippos and baboons are also big fans of our crops. And we have to be careful of being alone in the bush too far from the village because of the lions. Many of us had to learn outside before the Community Forest Management Group built this new classroom block. During the rainy season, it was miserable – our books got wet, we got wet… and during the winter months it would be very cold. It made it hard to concentrate and we did not feel motivated to attend school in such conditions. Now we can learn freely indoors without time or space constraints.” #CarbonCreditsWork #carbonoffsets #carboncredits #REDD #community #development #education #climatechange #climateaction #climateemergency #conservation Browning Environmental Communications

Community forestry work in Gabon We've been working in Gabon with local NGO Brainforest Gabon for the past 3 years. The project seeks to equip local communities with the legal knowledge they need to set up community forests and manage resources sustainably themselves. With roughly two years until the project's completion, much has been achieved, from 6 community forests being established or reinstated, to the increasing representation of women in forest management. But there is much still to be accomplished. Community-based forest management is one of the most effective ways to protect against commercial loggers and deforestation while supporting local economies. Brainforest Gabon, with ClientEarth's help, will focus this year on helping more communities manage and preserve the forests they rely on. https://lnkd.in/dBEJVsFJ #communityforest #biodiversityconservation #indigenouspeoples #localcommunities #deforestation

As a citizen of Uganda, if everything goes as planned, I would commend the Government of the Republic of Uganda, particularly through the Uganda National Roads Authority (UNRA), for the remarkable work and renovation of the Karuma Bridge. This infrastructure project is crucial for several reasons. First, it directly improves safety and accessibility. The renovation addresses the dangerous conditions of the old Karuma Bridge, which had deteriorated significantly, leading to safety concerns such as truck accidents. The new bridge will not only facilitate smoother traffic flow but also reduce accidents, contributing to safer transit for both local and international traffic, especially on the vital Northern Corridor. Second, the environmental benefits are substantial. The project is designed to minimize negative impacts on the surrounding natural ecosystems, including protected areas like Murchison Falls National Park and Karuma Wildlife Reserve. With environmental considerations such as avoiding piers in the Nile River and mitigating impacts on endangered species like hippopotamuses and African elephants, the project prioritizes sustainability. Furthermore, the reduction in road accidents and improved traffic flow will lead to lower emissions of greenhouse gases like CO2. For more detailed information on this project, you can refer to the full Environmental and Social Impact Assessment document provided below in a link https://lnkd.in/dbUTXJPg #KarumaBridge #UNRA cc: Government of Uganda Uganda National Roads Authority, UNRA Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA)
