In commemoration of #plasticfreejuly, we are highlighting Pillar Four of our Water+ thesis: Plastic and Solid Waste Circularity ♻️ The prevalence of plastic waste contaminating our environment has gained exposure in recent years. To holistically solve the water crisis and consider our impact beyond traditional WASH investments, we must recognise plastic and solid waste contamination as part of the problem and therefore, their circularity to be part of the solution. For this, we need to look towards circular economy solutions! 🌏 Plastic Free July and the Circular Economy – the innovative alignment between recycling and remanufacturing 🌏 The Hub is working to build sustainable communities in urban and regional areas that view waste as a resource. To help combat the plastic crisis, innovative solutions and a shift towards a circular economy are essential. Strong product stewardship is also crucial for tackling the plastic problem, where producers and users are more accountable for the end-of-life of their products; this involves better collection and recycling pathways to reform waste resources into products. Behavioural changes created through awareness campaigns such as Plastic Free July are also necessary to reduce plastic pollution. #PlasticFreeJuly #Sustainability #EnvironmentalScience #CircularEconomy

#The Recycling Challenge Plastic bottles have become a ubiquitous part of our daily lives, but their convenience comes at a steep environmental cost. The staggering truth is that only a fraction of plastic bottles are recycled, with millions ending up in landfills and oceans. It's time to challenge the status quo and revolutionize the way we approach plastic bottle recycling. #The Alarming Reality - Over 8 million tons of plastic waste enter our oceans every year, harming marine life and contaminating the food chain. - In the United States alone, only 29% of plastic bottles are recycled, with the remaining 71% contributing to greenhouse gas emissions and waste management issues. - The production of new plastic bottles requires massive amounts of fossil fuels, exacerbating climate change. #Breaking the Cycle Credence Ecofibre Pvt Ltd is leading the charge to improve recycling infrastructure. By investing in advanced recycling technologies and expanding facilities to process more plastic waste, we can: - Increase the recycling rate of plastic bottles - Convert plastic waste into valuable fibre for the textile industry - Reduce greenhouse gas emissions and waste management issues - Promote sustainable practices in the industry.

🌍 Today, September 5th, 2024, marks Plastic Overshoot Day—a sobering reminder that the world’s plastic waste now surpasses the Earth's capacity to manage it sustainably. From this day forward, every additional plastic product contributes to irreversible damage to our ecosystems, affecting our oceans, communities, and health. Plastic production is projected to double by 2040, potentially tripling plastic pollution. Although efforts in waste management have made some strides, they are far from enough. We need to question the current systems. Should we continue relying on materials that harm our planet and health, even if recycled? Or should we not focus on regenerative, holistically sustainable alternatives? Germany: Known for its advanced waste management systems, yet, in 2024, Germany is expected to generate over 5 million tons of plastic waste, with 15% of it still being mismanaged. United States: A global leader in waste generation, producing 42 million tons of plastic waste this year, with 22% of this going mismanaged. (Source: EA - Earth Action's Plastic Overshoot Day Report 2024) Even the most resource-rich nations are struggling. The solution requires a global effort focusing on three core areas: Scaling Collaborative Solutions Globally: Governments, businesses, and civil society must come together to advance and scale sustainable plastic alternatives. Shifting to Circular Economies: We must transition from a linear economy to one focused on reuse, repair, and regeneration. Supporting Adaptive, Proactive Policies: We need flexible policy frameworks that empower innovative solutions, especially for entrepreneurs pushing to commercialize sustainable alternatives. Plastic Overshoot Day is a stark reminder that courageous action is asked of every single one of us. Our choices today will determine the future health of our planet.
