[EU project, my project 2024 | Pivka.Kras.Presiha] Celebrating Biodiversity at the “Diversity of Upper Pivka” Event As part of the successful Pivka.Kras.Presiha project, co-funded by the European Union, the Municipality of Pivka organized the "Diversity of Upper Pivka" event to showcase the results of our efforts to protect nature in the Pivka intermittent lakes area. Participants at the event learned about: 🦇 The lives of bats, creating bat boxes to support their habitats. 🌾 The unique wet and dry grasslands of Pivka, home to diverse plant and animal species. 🌳 The remarkable trees of the Kalc Castle area and their environmental role. The event was also attended by participants of the traditional "Vilhar Memorial Hike." This initiative highlights the importance of preserving nature through strategic use of EU funds, enhancing both environmental protection and tourism infrastructure. We are proud to have made a lasting impact on the Pivka region’s biodiversity and sustainable future. Everyday is a school day. We continue to learn, evolve and adapt our approach to #BNG, landscape scale nature recovery and Nature Markets
Having been selected as a biodiversity credit pilot long before net gain became mandatory for new developments in England, the Iford Estate has spent years exploring that avenue to help fund hundreds of hectares of nature 🌿 ENDS speaks to estate manager Ben Taylor and CLM Ltd's Anthony Weston about the lessons learned from this early plunge – and how it gets easier with time ⬇️

On Monday, I speak and guide the panel discussion on biodiversity and business. Why it is better for businesses to commit to biodiversity? With different stakeholders (companies, the finance world, the federal government and a NGO), we want to look for the biggest common ground. Because it is this common ground that we need to take steps forward. Healthy peatlands can even be the most space-efficient long-term carbon store. Nevertheless, they remain heavily degraded. 🤝 This is why EUKI project "Building a European Peatlands Initiative" establishes an alliance of national governments and other stakeholders to collectively conserve and restore peatlands in Europe. In his article "Reviving Europe's Lungs" Martin Vallejo explores the efforts underway to protect and restore these vital ecosystems. The article highlights the challenges and opportunities of fostering institutional collaboration, improving data, and raising awareness across the continent. Despite challenges in governance, data gaps, and funding, momentum is growing through workshops, cross-country policy strategies, and awareness campaigns like #PeatlandMatters. The goal? A well-structured European Peatland Initiative with robust policies and permanent support by 2034. 👉 𝗥𝗲𝗮𝗱 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗳𝘂𝗹𝗹 𝗮𝗿𝘁𝗶𝗰𝗹𝗲 𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗲: https://lnkd.in/g7THaXvv Eurosite - the European Land Conservation Network CEEweb for Biodiversity #PeatlandConservation #ClimateAction #SustainableFarming #Biodiversity #EnvironmentalStewardship #EUKI #EUKIProject #BuildingaEuropeanPeatlandsAlliance

When it comes to knowing a company’s true commitment to sustainability, we must trust but verify. Demanding radical transparency in company supply chains can help. There is no group with a greater power to demand this than investors. Talk of sustainability without the corresponding transparency, is just part of the sustainability ideology and not a genuine solution. To anyone trying to understand the accelerating juggernaut of ‘Nature Positive’ (see comments), and if it can genuinely help tackle biodiversity loss, a good first step to is to read Jem Bendell’s latest book, Breaking Together. In 2007, Bendell co-authored the report, Deeper Luxury, quality and style when the world matters, one of the first reports discussing how, “our desires for human creations are making luxuries out of nature’s creation”. At the time, the report’s findings were acknowledged to be a wakeup call for all the “professionals and aficionados of the luxury goods industries”. Twenty years of experience in sustainable business and finance, working with international corporations, UN agencies and international NGOs, culminated in Bendell becoming a Professor of Sustainability Leadership. Maybe the best wakeup call and filter to view ‘Nature Positive’ initiatives is that in 2023 Bendell stepped away from a career he called, “the illustrious career of delusion that I had before my awakening and eventual move from first world professor to third world farmer”. The delusions he refers to include the myriad of phantom solutions created by the global elite to distract from the inherent unsustainability of an economic system built on never-ending growth. Nature Positive is wheeled out as the latest initiative to get those who broke the biosphere – large corporations – to ‘fix’ it. Part of the ‘idea’ is that private financial investment will make up for lack of government action! This would be a joke, if the situation wasn’t so tragic. This is not the time for yet another Phantom Solution: https://lnkd.in/gCpUr6uH

The Caribbean is a globally renowned biodiversity hotspot. Throughout its network of Small Island Developing States, the unique biological, economic and cultural fabric of the region must be protected. It's crucial to prioritize the enhancement of marine managed areas (MMAs) to meet the science-based 30x30 target. Yet real impact requires the whole region to play its part—collaboration is key. At the Caribbean Biodiversity Fund (CBF), we’re working together throughout the region and surrounding territories unifying support with strategic partners, governments, public and private sector, and local communities to achieve 30x30 goals. #30x30 #BiodiversityConservation #CaribbeanConservation #MarineConservation #BiodiversityFramework

🌱ICLEI Europe’s #Biodiversity & Nature-based Solutions team joins the #NatureRestorationRegulation expert group! Over 60% of EU policies are implemented on the local level. We are excited to represent our members in #Brussels as we help create tools for achieving restoration targets & mainstreaming #naturebasedsolutions. Meetings will begin in early 2025, and one of the first topics will be the proposal by the Commission to draft a uniform format for National Restoration Plans. ICLEI’s Biodiversity and Nature-based Solutions Team plays a core role in the consultation process and guidance development for the EC’s Urban Nature Plan initiative, and will support #ICLEIMembers Mannheim (Germany) and Paris (France) in testing the guidance as part of UNPplus EU.

Last week, I had the opportunity to attend the event "How to Consider Biodiversity in Investment Strategies," organized by Towards Sustainability. It was encouraging to learn that clients are increasingly open to incorporating biodiversity data into their investment processes. I look forward to engaging with stakeholders to discuss the current challenges, tools, and practices available, enabling us to meet their needs better and assist them in capturing emerging opportunities. #TowardsSustainabilityLabel #SustainableInvesting #Biodiversity
🍃 🐝 Today we had an interesting exchange of views on how biodiversity should be integrated in investment policies. Our guest speakers stressed the need for consistent EU policies, the mutual reinforcement of voluntary and mandatory actions and the effectiveness of collective approaches, among others. 🙌 We want to thank Emine Isciel, Diane Roissard, Lucian Peppelenbos, Sebastien Godinot and Quentin Meekers for sharing their expertise and recommendations. We are also grateful to Philippe Diaz for moderating the panel.
