Today is Pregnancy & Infant Loss Remembrance Day, a day to honor and remember all the precious babies who were taken too soon. This day is especially important for Black mothers and families, who often face higher rates of pregnancy and infant loss due to systemic racism and healthcare disparities. According to statistics, Black women are two to three times more likely to experience pregnancy and infant loss compared to white women. This is unacceptable and is a direct result of systemic racism within our healthcare system. Black mothers in Delaware deserve better access to quality healthcare and support during their pregnancies to ensure the best possible outcomes for themselves and their babies. As we remember and honor the babies we have lost, let's also continue to advocate for better healthcare for Black mothers and families in Delaware. Hundreds of birthing people die during pregnancy or in the year after in the US. The CDC shares that more than 80% of pregnancy-related deaths in the US are preventable. From our last post, we know that Black maternal mortality rates are higher than ever. Syphilis can be transmitted during pregnancy, leading to severe health consequences for babies. Though it can be difficult to detect, the good news is that it is curable. We urge you to emphasize the importance of regular testing to your patients. Pregnant women should be tested for syphilis not just once, but three times during their pregnancy to ensure their health and the health of their babies. Black women are three times more likely than White women to have and die of pregnancy-related complications. Valuing the lives of Black women requires that we work to address these inequities. The #USPSTF has several recommendations to help keep all pregnant people healthy, such as screening for hypertensive disorders throughout pregnancy and screening for gestational diabetes.
