Today's October month-end school assembly, we celebrated student achievements, including the "PE Star of the Month" awards. students were recognized for their excellent performance, effort, and sportsmanship in PE class, and received special sports awards. I also took the opportunity to remind everyone of our 3 basic PE rules: 1🥇: The less you talk - The more we play, 2🥈: When you want to talk-- Raise your hands. 3 🥉: Keep your hands to - Yourself . These simple rules help us create a positive and successful learning environment in PE.

‘Long life thirst for Physical Activity’ is a mantra that I stand by when thinking about our PE dept’s purpose. But how does this look? For me it should consist of: 1) Varied curriculum, with an emphasis on enjoyment moreover technical development. 2) Platform for able learners to compete at the highest school level possible (BSME & country wide competitions). 3) Opportunities for mass participation of contrasting abilities across a wide ranging ECA programme. Despite the challenges associated with leading a “turn around” school, looking to build a better future through strategic change over time it’s always great to see the small wins and positives that come to light. Over time we have worked on building improved industry based training courses and pathways for our students to be delivered on site, while also welcoming local area students into these courses when they have missed out on their options elsewhere. So as of 2025 Box Hill Senior will offer 8 industry based training courses for our students to access, linked to either VCE or Vocational VCE studies. Having improved numbers of students involved in applied or industry based learning from 5% in 2020 to over 32% in 2024, this is a small but crucial win for students and their future pathways. BHSSC on the move!!

A programme in its 2nd year with Bridge Academy Trust and Primary Education that has seen a huge impact with disengaged students in secondary schools supporting them tho find ways to regulate themselves in lessons that they might find difficult. The Ongar Academy Notley High School and Braintree Sixth Form A Student Mentor programme which I truly believe supports individuals with their academic work and their mindsets. As you can see above I have used the word support a lot instead of help as I feel words are viewed differently with different people. Using words like Student Mentor and not behaviour mentor builds trust with students and also parents as behaviour is often seen as bad. Students like to have a voice and to be heard, whether that’s through conversation to the right person that they trust or for some they might not feel comfortable talking so writing down how they feel on paper is a way they can express themselves. Like I said above I truly believe this programme can support students and we would like to grow and be able to support more and more students. #support #schools #StudentMentor
