9 Tiny Flowers that Beautify Your Garden By Ken Lain, the Mountain Gardener Few can resist the impressive sight of a giant sunflower or a stand of stately delphiniums in the landscape. If you've overlooked the appeal of tiny flowers, you're missing out on a world of fragrance and beauty that will enhance your borders, hanging baskets, and even fairy gardens. The wonder of tiny flowers lies in their sheer mass; a single plant may contain thousands of flowers beckoning butterflies with their shallow nectar tubes. Many tiny flowers are highly drought-proof; their small size helps them reduce moisture lost to evaporation. Tuck them into a rock wall, plant them between pavers, use them as fillers, or add them to cut flower arrangements. Then watch how these minuscule but mighty blooms encourage you to stop and get a closer look at nature's perfection in diminutive form. Cath's Garden Plants recommends 3 varieties of plants to make your garden look summery even if the weather is dull 🌸 These herbaceous perennials originate in South Africa & can provide splashes of colour in a reasonably well-drained border. All flower better in sun but can cope with some shade. Kniphofia ‘Rich Echoes’ produces rich apricot-yellow flowers on dark bronze stems & flowers twice in June/July & Sept/Oct reaching 60cm tall. Photo shown. Crocosmia ‘Fever Pitch’ has upward facing funnel-shaped bright, fiery-red flowers over unusual pleated leaves reaching about 60 cm tall. Attractive to bees & SLUG RESISTANT. Not invasive like Montbretia. As a contrast, Agapanthus ‘Navy Blue’ AGM produces rounded heads of rich midnight-blue trumpet-shaped flowers from mid-late summer. Agapanthus ‘Poppin’ Purple’ PBR has rounded dark purple almost black buds & flowers from mid-summer to autumn. Protect with a thick mulch over winter. Harmful if eaten. Take your garden to new Heights... One of the most common mistakes I see in gardens, is the lack of visual height; often the only things at eye level; are fences and a trampoline... And if that’s the case, that is what your eye will be drawn to, no matter how many beautiful flowers you have or how perfect your lawn is! Pergolas can work well to draw the eye however nothing achieves this as well as a small tree. You want a tree that won’t grow much above 2-5m high, otherwise it will quickly have a canopy above the sightline. It’s often worthwhile obtaining a multi-stemmed version so all their growing goes to each stem rather than one; further limiting or slowing the eventual height. I am fond of using Amelanchier Lamarkii, Prunus Serrula, Prunus x Subhirtella 'Autumnalis' or Cercis Canadensis forest pansy. If you want an evergreen variety have a look at Viburnum Burkwoodii or Eriobotrya Japonica. However, there are loads of other great small garden trees you can consider. Have a look at RHS website for ideas. www.rhs.org.uk/advice/ #GardenHeight #RHS #BloomWithDesignHeights #BeckenhamGardenDesigner #GardeningLife #GardenBlog #DesignHeights #GardenLife

Autumn is my favourite season, even if it’s a bit bittersweet as the landscape begins to transform with warm and rich colours. Many trees and shrubs start to show their Autumn hues, with leaves turning shades of gold, orange, red, and purple. Acers, Dogwoods, and Rhus Typhina are particularly striking. With late-blooming perennials hitting their peak too, adding vibrant splashes of colour to the garden when Summer blooms have long faded. Ornamental Grasses like Panicum and Calamagrostis produce plumes and seed heads that catch the light beautifully, adding texture to the garden. Many shrubs, such as holly, Pryracantha, Crabapples and Viburnums, begin to display colourful berries, which can attract birds to the garden. The angle of the sun is lower, casting a warm, golden light that enhances the colours of the garden. Early mornings might bring a touch of frost or dew, adding sparkle to leaves and grasses. Autumn is a busy time for wildlife too as animals prepare for winter, you might see squirrels gathering fruits, birds feasting on berries, or bees buzzing around on late-blooming flowers. This time of year, the garden is a dynamic and evolving scene, full of life and colour, with each day bringing subtle changes.
