AD UNBLOCKED Publicis dropped their 3Q #earnings yesterday, and gave us all some good signs for the #advertising economy. Their net revenues were up 5.6% across the board - after some uneven years in the mAd business, this is welcome news; perhaps most especially for Europe, which following some quite lean years, offered nearly 5% YoY growth. However, as I've said for some time, the greatest growth for this global ad player was in the three regions boasting the world's fastest growing economies: APAC, Middle East/Africa & LATAM. Those of us who enjoyed the benefits of growing/maturing ad economies over the last decade need to learn that real growth in the decade ahead will NOT come from our own back yards. For my friends in America or Europe looking for the NEXT great areas of truly explosive growth, my strong advice is to venture beyond the edges of your home field. As we come towards the end of our most successful Olympics ever (how good!), I've found myself wondering why some of Australia's biggest advertisers have chosen to irritate us with a single ad creative on frequency of what must be getting towards an average of well over 100. Notwithstanding the latest data from Kantar, System1 and Analytic Partners tells us that ad wearout doesn't exist, surely these brands would better serve their audience (and themselves) by building on their narratives with multiple creatives or at least a few cuts of the same. Advertising is a value exchange and to endear your audience and build brand equity you need to give something back - be it goosebumps, a laugh or just entertainment. I'm talking to Qantas, Woolies and NRMA here. All great creatives, but surely no longer adding marginal utility (or the intended tears) for these brands with what will no doubt be many more incremental exposures over the next few days. Hats off to Telstra here who probably invested a little more in creative to entertain the audience with multiple executions over the Games. I'm still not bored of their ads.

Let's unpack this "18-month long pitch" (there's almost no one that should be celebrating). Lego's Marketing Team cannot make a decision and clearly is horribly aligned internally. There is no reason why it should take this long to select a media agency. Especially when so much of the budget is digital (~75%). My guess is the regions couldn't agree, the CMO couldn't pull them together and the CEO should be wildly concerned about how much time and money was wasted on this review. Publicis probably gave away the farm to win this. An 18-month pitch is not a battle of titans trying to edge each other, like the famous 11 hour Isner/Mahut Wimbledon Match. This is likely painful negotiations both internally at Lego and with Publicis/the other agency participants. It also sets a horrible precedent for future reviews and agency employees should be concerned. Also don't forget, the best of the best get staffed on these reviews... participating in a pitch like this risks your best talent. Every Publicis client should be concerned. Since Publicis likely gave away the farm to win, they are going to look for it somewhere else. Every client of the losing agencies should be concerned. They spent millions in aggregate to pitch this, they are going to look for it somewhere else. Lego's HR team should be concerned. Their new office in Boston is attracting quite a bit of interest from talent. If it takes this long to make a decision, it's going to be a concern for new applicants. This kind of pitch process is a big part of what is destroying the ad agency model. These Lego clients should be ashamed of themselves and the rest of the ad community should hold them to task. There is only one winner... the pitch consultant. And they should be grateful they are not listed in this press release. No brand client should ever hire them again. (and if you're curious... 🚀Another 2023 Digital Creative Competition podium finisher. This time from the team at Publicis Danmark The idea now turned into campaign sees DBA - Den Blå Avis and Publicis leverage creativity to fuel tech. The automation solution enables the digital marketplace to send advertisements to Ocean Outdoor Denmark’s DOOH screens in near real-time. In total, they will push out more than 1,200 different products, in over 400 unique versions. The digital ads will run on 557 screens in 38 shopping centers in the coming weeks.
