🌱✨ Embracing the Jain Principle of Ahimsa ✨🌱 As we navigate our lives and careers, it's crucial to reflect on the values that guide us. Today, I'm inspired by the timeless wisdom of Jainism, particularly its emphasis on Ahimsa, or non-violence. In Jainism, Ahimsa extends far beyond refraining from physical harm to all sentient beings. It encompasses a profound respect for all life forms, from the tiniest insects to the largest mammals. At its core, Ahimsa teaches us the importance of living in harmony with the world around us and fostering compassion in every interaction. One of the most visible manifestations of Ahimsa in Jain practice is the commitment to a vegetarian lifestyle. By abstaining from the consumption of meat, Jains uphold their dedication to minimizing harm to living beings and honoring the sanctity of life. This choice reflects a deep-seated belief in the interconnectedness of all living creatures and the responsibility to protect and nurture each other. In today's world, where environmental sustainability and ethical consumption are at the forefront of global conversations, the Jain principle of Ahimsa offers a timeless blueprint for creating a more compassionate and sustainable society. By embracing vegetarianism and advocating for the welfare of all beings, we can make meaningful strides towards a more harmonious world. Let us heed the call of Ahimsa in our daily lives, extending kindness and empathy to every living organism we encounter. Together, let's spread the message of "Live and Let Live," fostering a world where all beings can thrive in peace and harmony. #Jainism #Ahimsa #Vegetarianism #LiveAndLetLive #Compassion #Sustainability #EthicalLiving

As human beings we take pride in our prowess of reasoning. Cogito et sum is the part that all rationalists wear like a badge of everlasting honour. But the entire statement of Descartes’s philosophy is Dubito ergo cogito et sum or I doubt therefore I am. I was surprised when that word - doubt - sank in. Beliefs are important - vegetarianism vs non-vegetarianism is a complex conflict of reason and emotion. But blind belief is giving up our ability to question, to doubt, to rethink the absolute veracity of a thought or ideology. Thinking is great but so is doubting. I choose to think and doubt at the same time. About everything: spirituality, nationality, sustainability, technology and, of course, food. PS: Do make this chutney - guaranteed to tickle your senses, without a doubt. #idoubtthereforeiam #slowfoodnotfastfood

I was asked to do a talk this weekend at my local festival, Valleyfest about "The Secrets of our Waterways". I started with a quiz on water facts, then asked for people to recall and share a moment in their life where water had some significance, then I dropped the latest research about the chemical cocktail found in our rivers (to be released tomorrow from WATERSHED INVESTIGATIONS), and ended with actions. Lots of ideas came up: - more compost toilets - grey/rain water redirected into cisterns - organic farming practices - flat ban on carcinogenic chemicals - embedded (virtual) water content on product labels This last one keeps coming up and I wonder who is advocating for it in the UK? A quick search brings up water efficiency labeling on white goods, but nothing on virtual water labeling- which is 90% of our water consumption and invisible/unacknowledged. Especially problematic when water is invisibly exported via products from water-stressed countries. Any ideas anyone? Waterwise Leana Hosea Rachel Salvidge WaterAid I have learnt so much from Professor Tony Allen in his research on Virtual Water and I have loved the graphics created by Angela Morelli to help visualise the figures. And I'm loving the wisdom from water protectors with advaya: https://lnkd.in/eA-Qk6AN

A video of 6 minutes and 28 seconds? Are you crazy? Well. gebana is not a PR stunt. Changing the rules of the trade is a multi-layered challenge. To credibly do this and measure the impact we have created our impact tree. A model to explain and measure the impact on social, economical and ecological criteria. 📺 We demonstrate this with this beautiful video - for all who want to understand our way and who care about fairer trade. #gebana #fairtrade #organic

We are the FOMO generation. To stay ahead and keep up with the progress we want nonstop growth. And in the hustle to get our next big thing we forget the value of timelessness. After a hectic event, Darnish Singh Kalra and I came across this cute place called Cafe Churchill while exploring Colaba and it made us realise the importance of timelessness. Run by 2 Parsi women, it took us 50 years back. Every corner screamed what Colaba looked like in those days. What was shocking to see is that despite zero innovation the cafe has stayed true to its legacy and we waited almost 25 minutes to experience what it feels like. After years we shared tables with strangers and enjoyed the best food options at the right price and insane quantity. It made us realise that innovation is not always the answer. Sometimes it is preserving tradition and timelessness because the legacy holds importance too. So take that pause and don’t let that timeless element go away. Preserve what is unique and make sure that becomes your legacy. Change is inevitable, but true growth lies in balancing innovation with elements that are timeless. Are you in a hurry to achieve everything too? #legacy #preserve

It was Guru Purab, the festival that celebrates wisdom and humility. Growing up, it was more than a religious occasion for me—it was a day of reflection. I remember vividly one Guru Purab morning. My father, a man of few words but profound wisdom, handed me a piece of paper with just one line on it: "The greatest wealth is the wealth of knowledge." I didn’t understand it then. As a young, wide-eyed kid, I thought wealth meant stacks of cash and shiny toys. But my father smiled and took me to the Gurdwara. We spent the day serving langar, the community meal. I saw people from all walks of life—rich, poor, young, old—sitting together, sharing the same food. He turned to me and said: "True value isn’t in what you keep for yourself; it’s in what you give and how you uplift others." Years later, that lesson would become my mantra as an investor: Invest in people, not just projects. Create opportunities that empower communities. Measure success not by returns alone but by impact. Every portfolio I build and every decision I make ties back to those values of humility, service, and shared growth. So, today, as I celebrate this day of wisdom, I reflect on: How I can add value to others. How my investments can serve the larger good. Because at the end of the day, wealth that doesn’t empower is wealth wasted. Wishing you all a blessed and inspiring Guru Purab. 🙏 May wisdom, service, and humility guide us always. #GuruPurab #GuruNanakDevJi #legacy #lifelessons #wisdom #humility #15Nov24

"Pause before offering solutions." This was one of my key takeaways from last week's session at the Anubhav Lecture Series, South Asia—a simple lesson just as relevant in life as in work. James Abraham led us through the importance of understanding a problem fully before jumping to solutions, using tools like the Hypothesis Pyramid and #MECE (Mutually Exclusive, Collectively Exhaustive). We applied this approach to complex issues like #terrorism and #subsistence in Araku Valley. #Mumbai and #Bengaluru folks, you've probably seen #Araku Cafes in your cities, but do you know the story behind them? Once a region battling #poverty and #insurgency, Araku Valley now thrives with sustainable coffee farming, thanks to the Naandi Foundation and the tribal community. After 15 years of challenges, ARAKU Coffee has become a global brand—helping farmers, restoring nature, and redefining impact. (More resources in comment) Breaking down the problems and data points in this session’s case study reminded me how defining problems shapes the solutions we discover. By asking better questions, we can create deeper, more meaningful impact. Grateful to be part of a cohort that inspires thoughtful problem-solving.
