💡 𝐒𝐮𝐫𝐯𝐢𝐯𝐚𝐥 𝐑𝐚𝐭𝐞 𝐯𝐬. 𝐒𝐮𝐫𝐯𝐢𝐯𝐨𝐫𝐬𝐡𝐢𝐩 𝐢𝐧 𝐂𝐫𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐥 𝐈𝐥𝐥𝐧𝐞𝐬𝐬 💡 I encourage everyone involved in caring for critically ill patients to watch this thought-provoking presentation on the long-term consequences of critical illness, also known as post-intensive care syndrome (PICS). Alongside many interesting insights, it analyzes mortality rates not only at ICU discharge but also at 6 months and 48 months post-hospitalization. More importantly, it sheds light on the often-overlooked disabilities and challenges that survivors face, including: 𝐖𝐚𝐬𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐬𝐲𝐧𝐝𝐫𝐨𝐦𝐞: Metabolic dysfunction that hampers physical and neurocognitive recovery. 𝐍𝐞𝐮𝐫𝐨𝐞𝐧𝐝𝐨𝐜𝐫𝐢𝐧𝐞 𝐢𝐦𝐛𝐚𝐥𝐚𝐧𝐜𝐞𝐬: Adding complexity to recovery after ICU care. 𝐋𝐨𝐧𝐠-𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐦 𝐜𝐨𝐠𝐧𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐯𝐞 𝐢𝐦𝐩𝐚𝐢𝐫𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭: Memory loss, attention deficits, and difficulty with executive functions, disrupting everyday life. 𝐏𝐓𝐒𝐃: A significant psychological burden for many survivors. 𝐂𝐫𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐥 𝐢𝐥𝐥𝐧𝐞𝐬𝐬 𝐩𝐨𝐥𝐲𝐧𝐞𝐮𝐫𝐨𝐩𝐚𝐭𝐡𝐲 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐦𝐲𝐨𝐩𝐚𝐭𝐡𝐲: Leading to persistent physical impairments. 𝐒𝐞𝐜𝐨𝐧𝐝𝐚𝐫𝐲 𝐬𝐜𝐥𝐞𝐫𝐨𝐬𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐜𝐡𝐨𝐥𝐚𝐧𝐠𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐬: A rare yet devastating condition that leads to liver cirrhosis and often requires transplantation. The presentation concludes with actionable insights and suggestions for the future on providing better care for these patients.

Last week, I had the opportunity to sit down with Dr. Tom Cowan, and we discussed the myths around modern medicine, including alternative medicine. Dr. Cowan shared personal anecdotes and identified several myths that can harm our health and well-being. Whether one agrees with Dr. Cowan or not, this episode is full of information that can allow us to question how we think about viruses and the function of our immune system.
