💡 AI Ethics: A Shared Responsibility As AI increasingly shapes decision-making, the ethical challenges in our field demand collective action. Issues like biased data, underrepresentation, and unintended consequences highlight the need for collaboration to build fair and transparent systems. Here’s a good read, “What Do We Do About the Biases in AI?” by James Manyika, Jake Silberg, and Brittany Presten that addresses how we can tackle bias in AI: https://lnkd.in/dh32i2M Let’s reflect: How are you ensuring ethical practices in your AI projects? Excited to share my new article, “The Harms of Terminology: Why We Should Reject So-Called ‘Frontier AI’” — now available and open access: https://lnkd.in/eujhe74G “Frontier AI” is AI hype. It is hypothetical, not real. It distracts focus away from AI’s actual harms by focusing on so-called “existential risk.” It carries with it connotations of colonialism and conquest that we should not be endorsing. The sooner everyone stops using this term, the better. #AI #AIhype

How can we leverage technology as an enabler for human flourishing? AI is no different. In Moral AI and How We Get There, my brilliant friends, Duke University colleague Jana Schaich Borg and Vincent Conitzer along with their co-coauthor , Walter Sinnott-Armstrong , explore the role we can play and our responsibility in determining AI for good. As Jana wrote in her recent LinkedIn post - “…. how the AI story unfolds will depend just as much on human moral decision-making and moral intelligence as it does on artificial decision-making and intelligence. As we say on the last page, “In the end, humans are both the directors and the protagonists of the moral AI story. AI is just along for the ride – for now.” Get your copy at: Moral AI https://a.co/d/ixhGOnO #AI #ethics

#AI_Identity vs #Self_Identity is a thought-provoking topic, and personal to me since a friend is working on #DigitalTwins. In the essay "Should You Let AI Tell You Who You Are and What You Should Do?", the author delves into the influence of #machinelearning algorithms on our lives, questioning whether we should trust AI to make decisions for us. And your thoughts? The essay raises concerns about the potential consequences of relinquishing control to AI. By outsourcing decisions to algorithms, individuals may neglect the moral responsibility of self-creation and risk surrendering their identity to external entities like companies and governments. The author highlights how our digital footprint, captured by our phones and apps, provides a wealth of personal information that is already exploited for various purposes. This data can shape our online experiences and influence our behavior without our awareness. Furthermore, the essay warns that excessive reliance on AI could hinder our ability to independently craft our identities. Relying on algorithms may inadvertently mold our self-perception without realizing it, and limit our capacity for authentic self-expression and growth. https://lnkd.in/g9kVNhtX #AI #PersonalIdentity #MachineLearning

A very thought provoking and profound article by Hamilton Mann. Made me think of the concept of trust in AI, as framed through the lens of Paul Zak's definition, which views trust as a reciprocal relationship characterized by both trusting and being trusted in return, introducing a nuanced perspective into the discourse on human-computer interaction. Zak, a neuroeconomist, has extensively researched how trust is established among humans, emphasizing the role of oxytocin, a neurotransmitter in the brain that plays a significant role in social bonding and trust. When we consider the idea of trust in the context of AI, it's crucial to understand that the traditional biological mechanisms, such as the production of oxytocin, do not directly apply. Human trust in AI is not predicated on interpersonal, biochemical processes but rather on the reliability, security, and transparency of the technology. Trust in AI systems is built through consistent performance, ethical decision-making, and the minimization of errors and biases. It's a form of trust that's based more on predictability and dependability than on emotional bonding. The reason this form of trust may "save us," so to speak, is multifaceted. As AI technologies become more integrated into society, being able to rely on these systems for accuracy, fairness, and ethical actions is paramount. In summary, while the concept of trust as a two-way street involving oxytocin doesn't directly translate to AI, the principle of establishing a reliable and reciprocal relationship does. Trust in AI, grounded in its reliability and ethical design, is crucial for its integration into society and may indeed be what "saves" us by ensuring these technologies contribute positively to human progress. #TrustInAI #PaulZak #OxytocinAndAI #EthicalAI #HumanComputerInteraction #AIForGood. #TechnologyEthics #DigitalTrust #AIIntegration https://lnkd.in/ezumNGuJ

It's a wrap, and we ended with a bang! Excellent panel on #Trust & #Ethics in the age of #AI with Stephen Fulton, Etay Maor, and Richard McGowan. Lots of great insights and a very balanced view on #AI. Yes, there is a lot of promise; yes, there is a lot of hype; no, we will not be replaced with AI. To quote Etay Maor " #AI will not replace people, but people who can use #AI will replace people who cannot." Applied Economics and Analytics Boston College

What Does the Recent #World #Economic #Forum #Verdict on #Artifical #Intelligence tells us? Specifically, about the need to build more #Trust in AI. Current Trust level in AI sits at very low 30%. In contrast, trust level in Technology Companies is at a much higher 76%. Evidently, the real Challenge for AI in gaining wider acceptance is on how it can reduce current division about its acceptance and trust in its use. A good starting point requires more focus on communication and education to give a better understanding of AI and the benefits it can offer society as a whole. Happy to hear and share other people's perspective on this important issue.
