Bilston has a history of doing things its own way. Legacies of making, social organising and innovation have cultivated a unique local energy — not least the first UK town to index happiness. With new central government funding coming into the town over the next decade, residents must be empowered to draw on this legacy to seed new cultural growth in Bilston. We’ve been working to produce a Cultural Infrastructure Micro-Plan to set a trajectory for culture rooted in local values. We’ve worked with the West Midlands Combined Authority and City of Wolverhampton Council – supported by collaborators PRD and Stockdale – and connected with local stakeholders who will take forwards opportunities. Current momentum to strengthen Bilston’s offer as a place for culture is strong and over £45 million is destined for Bilston across the next ten years. This micro-plan for Bilston’s cultural development recommends four priority projects. These projects align closely with Bilston’s cultural requirements and aim to leverage existing and emerging cultural initiatives, such as those led by the Gazebo Theatre, the new Urban Room, Bilston Market regeneration efforts, and the grassroots music scene. We recognise it is important to ensure opportunities for culture lock in Bilston’s values — the things like happiness, cohesion, and healthy communities that have always been important to people in this place. Understanding which town centre assets can play a role in this mission, and imagining how Bilston’s creative residents can activate them, will be key first steps in embedding culture in the town. In our latest blog, Development Director, Max Bentham, explores how Crescent Salford is poised to transform 240 acres of the city into a globally recognised destination for people to live, learn, work and play. Creating a vibrant future for Swindon town centre will require the combined effort of the private, public and voluntary sectors. That's why a new draft document - ‘Heart of Swindon’ - has been produced to mobilise effort and guide the future investment needed to help the town centre transition from a past dominated by retail, to a future destination where people live, work, socialise and study. It sets out eight ambitions to reinvent the town centre and over 50 ways these could be realised, including: 👉 Exploring the redevelopment of the Brunel Centre with the owner, which could marry retail and other uses including community space, workspaces and apartment living for students, young people and those downsizing. 👉 Creating up to 5,000 new homes in the town centre, many of which would be affordable. 👉 Building a new state-of-the-art entertainment venue, able to cater for a wide range of events including large West End touring shows, music concerts and other big events. 👉 Developing a new professional performance space in the town centre for Wilkes Academy, to rehearse and showcase students’ work. It has been informed by the expertise and input of key landowners, developers, educational institutions, government agencies and businesses. Pending a green light at next week's Cabinet meeting (13 November), the Council will then invite views on the draft vision from residents and all interested parties to help inform a final version. The Atlanta Beltline is set to transform the Bankhead neighborhood with a $270 million mixed-use development on a 31-acre site. This ambitious project aims to provide up to 1,100 apartments and townhomes, with an emphasis on affordability—a significant 30% of residences will be dedicated to families earning between 50-80% of the area median income. By incorporating commercial space and enhancing connectivity to public green spaces and transit, this initiative underscores the Beltline's mission to create inclusive communities. Let's celebrate innovative development that prioritizes both affordability and accessibility. #PathSynch

There is no one-size-fits-all solution for addressing housing needs, but ensuring a balanced mix of options, including co-operative housing, is essential. Learning from countries who are not facing a housing crisis can provide valuable insights. Many European nations lead the way in innovative co-operative housing, where the focus is on creating homes designed for people, not profit. In this article, Melina Morrison, from Australian co-op apex Business Council of Co-operatives and Mutuals (BCCM), talks about a recent fact-finding tour of Copenhagen, Vienna and Zurich. https://lnkd.in/gdgAXCmG

For The Lead we've been focusing a lot on Blackpool in recent months, and the latest edition of The Blackpool Lead took a look at the swathe of regeneration schemes happening across the town. I sat down with Blackpool Council leader and regen chief to understand their strategy, some of the complexities in attracting investment and their approach to it. Not all of it is straightforward and the Multiversity scheme in particular brings the decision to use the likes of compulsory purchase orders into sharp focus. #redevelopment #regeneration #politics #blackpool

“The YIMBYs currently want cities not merely planned on a spreadsheet, but resembling one, made of gray lines and numbers. Decrying the city as a museum, they propose instead the city as a mausoleum, in which we’re housed in blocks of numbered drawers. They need to reconstitute their position on the historical city and their magical thinking about the market so that a common cause on real action on affordable housing can be made. Before and while we renovate the idea of the historical city, and until they revise their approach, every skerrick of power and influence has to be directed at the fight to defend the historical city. We, and our predecessors, conservatives and communists together, and all points between, held these back from ruin once, and we have to do it again. The struggle is unique. Bad policies and governments come and go. Once our history is gone, it’s gone. And we with it”. It’s great to see more articles renouncing the YIMBY movements policies and calling for a more nuanced and realistic approach. We need more of them as well as the new political umbrella body made up of resident groups with pooled resources and some paid staff to match the collective YIMBY lobbying effort that Guy Rundle is calling for so they can assert their collective power, their power to direct votes, and devote resources to refuting YIMBY myths. https://lnkd.in/gFyRVcui #YIMBY #MIMBY #NIMBY #MissingMiddle #AffordableHousing YIMBY Melbourne YIMBY Qld Sydney YIMBY Greater Canberra Greater Brisbane
I'm picking a fight with the YIMBYs. And suggesting a truce (of sorts)

For over 60 years, the Cogswell Interchange has cast a shadow over the African Nova Scotian community in Halifax. Homes and businesses were torn down, displacing families and forcing them to relocate to the North End. Now, as the interchange undergoes redevelopment, our community faces a new threat: Gentrification. We’re being pushed out of our own neighbourhood once again. But we’re not just accepting this fate. The Halifax North End ‘New Roots’ Community Land Trust was created to ensure that this time, the African Nova Scotian community benefits from the changes. We envision a vibrant mixed-use development, a hub of activity with community spaces, a Black cultural and recreational centre, and commercial spaces specifically designed for Black-owned businesses. This isn’t just about buildings; it’s about preserving our economic and cultural legacy. The memories lost through land dispossession, that’s rarely ever mentioned. It’s about ensuring that the African Nova Scotian (ANS) community remains a strong and thriving force in Halifax. We need your help to make this vision a reality. Visit our website at https://www.nehclt.ca/ to learn more and get involved. Together, we can build a brighter future for the African Nova Scotian North End. Photo credit: Halifax Municipal Archives

This! Portland should focus on this instead of listening to out of state land owners who refuse to adapt to the new normal. Instead of listening to the whiny commercial building owners complain about teleworking we should focus on building communities that support local business and affordable housing 24/7! Thousands of square feet available, plenty of jobs downtown, affordable housing via adaptive reuse seems like a win win if we replaced the housing that was one prominent in an area of need. It just seems like the easiest solution is often ignored when the elite have to maybe make an effort.
