A hard truth of the current #fundraising environment is that when it comes to proving momentum, the goal posts continue to shift. While revenue thresholds that earn founders the right to raise their next round have gone up significantly in absolute terms, capital eligibility is also very much about standing out from the peer group. And ideally a peer group that hasn’t “burned” investors recently. This is one of the many topics my fellow panelists Lucas Timberlake and John Clark Higgins and I covered at our New York Tech Week panel on Tuesday. We also touched on another related and important matter: if you’re a #startup #founder who keeps hearing “not yet” or “I need to see more traction,” what do you do with that? Some founders check back in with the VC after a few months with a fundraising update but little business progress, explaining that they are waiting for the capital to get more done. Other founders really lean into business development and find a way to deliver growth rather than excuses. Those entrepreneurs most definitely impress and win over investors. With so many events and parties happening this week, I’m glad we were able to create a curated, intimate alternative where both attendees and panelists alike felt engaged in a deep conversation. Thanks again Arina Shulga for hosting! #NYtechweek #Fintech Altari Ventures

37% of priced seed rounds in Q4 2023 were bridge rounds. In today’s venture climate, Julia Gudish Krieger of Pari Passu Venture Partners, an early-stage firm focused on SaaS and commerce enablement sectors, advises: "Don’t worry about getting cute on valuation. Focus on bringing in real runway and excellent partners who can help you weather any storms ahead.” Calculus for raising extension or bridge rounds has changed amid the current venture landscape. Deal counts and valuations have both declined at nearly every startup stage. In this environment, the attitude toward extension rounds is more positive. Dive into more of the data behind this shift: https://lnkd.in/gu2iNA34

Got to meet legendary investor Mike Maples, Jr last week! Mike is a founding partner at Floodgate and an early investor in companies like Twitter, Lyft, Twitch, and Okta. His talk was primarily focused on anti-patterns that lead to asymmetric outcomes and elements of his book Pattern Breakers. Mike shared that roughly 85% of Floodgate’s exit profits came from “pivots” — namely startups that started with one idea and then ended up course-correcting to something very different. One of the concepts that resonated most with me was Inflection Theory, which Mike describes as the combination of inflections, insights, and living in the future. He explained that the most successful startups aren’t just about following best practices or having a great initial idea. Instead, they harness external events (inflections) that can radically shift how people think, feel, and act. The real magic happens when founders gain non-obvious insights from these inflections and then build something groundbreaking based on what’s missing in the future. Simply put -- if you have a clear vision of what the future will look like (not your opinion of what the future should be), then you can create a language to define that vision, get individuals to use this language to reject the status quo, and ultimately create a new market that has rules that current incumbents can't play within. This discussion on non-obvious insights was first introduced at YC when Michael Seibel asked us to identify the key insights for some of the largest companies (perhaps influenced by his relationship with Mike). The funny thing is that non-obvious insights are presented to us every day, it's whether our eyes are open wide enough to see them.
