BTC Recognizes the 16 Days of Activism against Gender Based Violence It has been one week since the 16 days of activism ended and BTC locked hands with the global community to recognize Gender Based Violence. To show our support, we provided a donation to the Bahamas Crisis Center to support their efforts and initiatives to provide relief for those in need. Director of the Bahamas Crisis Center, Dr. Sandra Dean-Patterson expressed her gratitude to BTC for its contribution. "I am truly grateful for the recognition of The Bahamas Crisis Center by BTC. We respond to cries and stories of many abused woman and children and this donation will aid us in providing the greatest possible support to these individuals. We provide a 24-hour clinic that helps women fleeing abusive situations and children who have witnessed or suffered abuse. So again, we thank BTC for this donation, especially during this holiday season." Gender based violence is prevalent in our region, and BTC emphasized its commitment to combatting gender-based violence, aligning with its parent company Liberty Latin America’s comprehensive gender-based violence policy that includes resources and awareness, counselling, leave from work, free relocation, and legal support.

The countdown is on! Our #RISE8K is less then six months away – will you join us? Whether you’ve joined us before or have never heard of the 8K for Women – if you’re interested in running, standing against abuse as an individual or business, a personal challenge or a unique event for your school, now is the time to get involved with the 2024 run! “The 8K for Women is a fabulous event, and truly vital fundraiser for us at RISE in the charities 30th year”, said our CEO Jo Gough. “Hundreds of women get together to say NO to domestic and sexual violence, and YES to sisterhood, and run a beautiful 8K course. It’s flat, with incredible sea views all the way, and every year, we’re supported by brilliant entertainers who keep our runners motivated from Saltdean to the Marina and back again. We’ve listened to feedback from last year and are going to be providing more homemade cake at the finish line – it's always so popular!” This year, in the face of significant funding cuts, the run is more important to us than ever. 500 runners raising £70 each will raise £35,000 – which will fund a specialist worker to help women, children and LGBT survivors. Racism, anti-semitism, and white supremacy are not welcome in this district or this community. Yesterday, a hate group marched through downtown Tallahassee. These neo-fascists preach white supremacy. I won’t name them here. They can take their fear and hate with them on their way out. What do we as a community do now? (links are in the comments below & our bio) 1 - I am donating to the Southern Poverty Law Center, which monitors extremist hate groups and exposes their activities. If you are able, consider a donation to a group that works against extremist hate groups. 2 - They provide ten ways to fight hate: A community response guide. 3 - PBSKids has this video and other resources for anyone who wants to learn how to talk to children about racism. Love you all, -David

Today marks the start of 16 Days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence. A campaign led by UN Women annually to call for an end to violence against women and girls, everywhere. Like other charities in this arena, our work to tackle violence against women and girls is a key focus for us every day of the year - with 365 days of activism to protect those at risk of harm. Moments such as this however, allow us to pause and take stock of the momentous task at hand. For True Honour specifically, it poses a reminder that this year, as with the last, there is still no statutory definition of honour-based abuse, as there is for domestic abuse and forced marriage. In the article below, True Honour Chair (and former police officer) Kul Mahay shares his view on the unique complexities posed by honour-based violence, highlighting the need for a systemic, survivor centred approach to empower victims to break their silence and eradicate these hidden crimes from our society. Today is DAY 30 of #31in31 for Domestic Violence Awareness Month. Gendered violence might end in physical violence and even murder, but it never starts there. Coercive control, sexual, financial, psychological and other forms of abuse almost always precede it and they tend to be ‘invisible’ to others. It is our responsibility – all of us – to watch out for those signs, even the subtle signs such as put-downs and microaggressions, and to do or say something about them. Please help make an impact this Domestic Violence Awareness Month. Your tax-deductible donation will be used well. bit.ly/DAM-2024-KK

Violence against women takes many forms – from harassment to intimate partner violence to sexual violence being used as a weapon of war. Bertha’s Legacy was established to help survivors of gender-based violence in Zimbabwe. Most of the women we work with are affected by sexual violence. It is an obstacle in allowing them to live dignified lives, free from fear. The stigma surrounding such violence means that people are often too afraid to speak out, and this silence enables the violence to continue. This is the most important time than ever for us to come together to fight for the safety of our women and girls. Why not make a one-off donation today to ensure we can continue to be there for those who need us.
