My contribution @جريدة الاخبار اليوميه with the brilliant journalist Haidy Eldesouky commenting on the future of the Middle Eastern conflict under a new Trump administration. President Donald Trump is poised to return to the U.S. presidency amid unprecedented conflict and uncertainty in the Middle East. He has promised to address these issues and seeks to establish peace. A second Trump administration is likely to continue this approach to Iran, emphasizing economic sanctions, strong rhetoric, targeted military actions, and a robust opposition to diplomatic efforts regarding a new nuclear deal. In broader policy areas, we can expect a lower priority placed on human rights and democracy in U.S. policy and a higher emphasis on energy cooperation and economic policy. There may be a largely hands-off approach in Syria, potentially resulting in the withdrawal of U.S. forces from the country. The administration might also pursue a transactional relationship with regional leaders like President Abdel-Fattah el-Sisi of Egypt and Recep Tayyip Erdoğan of Turkey. Additionally, there will likely be support for the notion that Jerusalem should remain the capital of Israel while asserting that it should remain accessible to all faiths. Efforts may be made to seek a diplomatic resolution to the conflict along the Israel-Lebanon border, aiming for a sovereign Lebanon. Irina Tsukerman Tammy Lynn Palacios

"In the heart of Bir Gandus commune, the Fifth Regional Forum unfolded on 23 October 2023 drawing together a diverse assembly of over 71 individuals, including decision-makers, representatives from the US-Middle East Partnership Initiative (MEPI), and local stakeholders. The theme, "The responsibilities of the local CSOs in promoting sustainable development: challenges and implementing effective solutions," resonated throughout the discussions, addressing economic, social, and cultural issues facing the southern region." @usmepi 🔗Read more: https://lnkd.in/eDVmX5sQ

Trump wants to be seen as having a business savvy/dymanic foreign policy style I would encourage the incoming administration to balance the dynamism with sustainable outcomes and to balance all threats and interests - to not ultimately sacrifice some U.S. interests for the focus of a few. This has been the challenge for the past few administrations - how does the U.S. engage meaningfully & impactfully? I would argue that the answer is in greater inter-agency coordination and communication, to make U.S. efforts more effective.
