U.S. adults with a disability are less likely than those without a disability to say they own a desktop or laptop (62% vs. 81%) or a smartphone (72% vs. 88%), according to a Pew Research Center survey from winter 2021. But let's not just stop at this statistic; let's explore how we can bridge this gap together! Many individuals with disabilities face unique challenges when it comes to technology adoption. Factors like affordability, accessibility features, and digital literacy play a crucial role in these disparities. Solutions: Here are some ways we can work towards a more inclusive digital world: 💡 Affordability: Advocate for policies and initiatives that make assistive technology more affordable for individuals with disabilities. Encourage companies to offer discounts or subsidies for accessible devices. 💡 Accessibility Features: Promote the importance of built-in accessibility features in devices and software. Encourage tech companies to prioritize accessibility and provide user-friendly options. 💡 Digital Literacy: Support programs that provide digital literacy training for individuals with disabilities. 💡 Awareness: Raise awareness about the benefits of technology adoption for people with disabilities. Today is a day for everyone to become more aware of these challenges in access and inclusion in our digital world. The GAAD Foundation, launched in 2021, aims to make accessibility a core part of tech and digital product development, everywhere. 𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁'𝘀 𝗗𝗶𝗴𝗶𝘁𝗮𝗹 𝗔𝗰𝗰𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗶𝗯𝗶𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆? It's about making web and mobile apps usable for everyone, including those with disabilities, like Justin. He dreams of becoming an author, public speaker, and an advocate for disability rights. "Technology is my way to communicate with the world. It's my freedom and my voice," says Justin. Because of increased awareness and innovation from developers, Justin uses tools like Office 365, PowerPoint, OneNote, and Immersive Reader, to write a young adult action-packed mystery featuring a main character with cerebral palsy. I think it is well worth remembering that the social model of disability says that disability is caused by how society is organised, rather than by a person’s impairment or difference. In an age when many services are increasingly moving online, removing digital barriers needs to be recognised with the same importance as removing barriers in the physical world. We need our digital spaces to be accessible to all, as we do our physical spaces. Access to technology can be hugely empowering for people with disabilities; helping people learn, connect and engage with the wider world. It has huge potential to help increase disabled peoples independence. Digital technology can therefore bring huge added value to the lives of people with disabilities, and that very much includes people with learning disabilities. This should rightly be embraced and celebrated. I do however strongly feel, that as we move towards a more digitally inclusive world, we must not allow technology to become a replacement for real human contact and interaction. This of course very much includes the care and support people receive. While we remove the barriers to digital inclusion, we must also keep removing those barriers in the physical world. It should never be one or the other. Full inclusion in our society can and must include both.
