Why Efficient Doesn’t Always Mean “Better” in Design (or Life!)
What if all buildings looked like Gaudí’s Sagrada Familia?
Unique, bold, and full of unexpected details that make you stop and wonder. But, thanks to our obsession with efficiency and “logic,” most modern buildings look like glass boxes—practical, but a bit soulless, wouldn’t you agree?
In the rush to streamline everything, we’ve forgotten that meaning often comes from the unexpected. Like Gaudí’s work, which breaks every rule of modernism to create something truly memorable, or even something as simple as a brand’s decision to go the extra mile with design, rather than sticking to a minimalist, cost-effective approach.
It’s the same with food! Kids, for example, instinctively avoid anything with unexpected flavors because it feels “wrong” to them. But adults? We’ve learned to appreciate a bit of spice or surprise—it’s what makes food (and life!) interesting.
So, here’s the takeaway: Sometimes, it’s worth deviating from “efficient” and embracing the quirky, the unique, and even the seemingly irrational. Because, in the end, that’s what gives things meaning.
Do you think we’re losing meaning by focusing too much on efficiency?
