Change and consistency are constant features I balance as a business leader. The need to change is inevitable, but overcorrecting for it can be as bad as ignoring it. I've massive admiration for Bob Iger. His ability to temper ambition with a steadiness and emotional consistency is something strive for in my leadership. Blending the management of creatives with a diverse production and consultancy capability, I like to see the echoes of our business in the lessons he's shared during his time at The Walt Disney Company. Hopefully not straying too far into delusions of grandeur when I do. I often return to Iger's insight "Innovate or die, and there’s no innovation if you operate out of fear of the new or untested.” Embracing challenges is something we've done much more of recently, and it's paid off. Confident in our creativity and capability as a team. But this confidence only comes from consistency. A consistent commitment to quality, and service, and the time honoured principles passed down through our business since 1989. Whilst I resonate far more with Mr Iger, Jeff Bezos' insight on change is a balancing force I often come back to for clients and in our own company. "I very frequently get the question: What's going to change in the next 10 years?' (...) I almost never get the question: 'What's not going to change in the next 10 years? And I submit (...) that second question is actually the more important of the two -- because you can build a business strategy around the things that are stable in time." After a period of intense and often forced change, I believe the biggest challenge now is tempering the strategic strength found in consistency, with the ability to embrace innovation where it matters. It's been an extraordinary ride for the last couple of years, and hopefully we'll all hold on throughout another novel year ahead for many businesses. A lesson in rebranding an 9-year-old company. When we first considered rebranding from our name Tech Circus to Iconic, I wasn’t entirely convinced that Iconic was the right new name. It felt boastful, almost like we were trying too hard to make a statement about ourselves. After exploring hundreds of other options, I returned to Iconic with a new perspective: it wasn’t about us being Iconic. It was about making our events Iconic. It wasn't a statement. It was a mission. Since the rebrand, everything has shifted: our business, culture, and goals. The name became more than just a title; it’s now the standard we aim for in everything we do. Here are some real examples of how it has changed our company. 🕘 Morning meetings: How do we elevate our events from average to truly Iconic is a common topic. 💬 Client conversations: "We need to work on a cheaper budget." Well, then we can’t deliver something Iconic. Quality first, always. (Spoiler: they come back.) 👂 Criticism: "If your event isn’t fully accessible, how can it ever be Iconic?" Inviting this attendee feedback pushes us to constantly raise the bar. 🎨 Attendee experience: Every event is treated like a design project; every touchpoint. Will our attendees walk away and say that it was "iconic". Rebranding to Iconic was the best decision we ever made. It gave us a mission: to pursue excellence relentlessly. It’s not about being "good enough." We’ve moved away from mediocrity and focus only on the exceptional. The journey to making an event Iconic isn’t immediate. It’s built over time through trial and error. But when you get there, you know it. A brand name alone doesn’t mean much.
