This Friday nominations for Finishes and Interiors Sector Board close. FIS exists to make a difference, we don't distribute profit and operate a completely transparent open book on our Management Accounts with everything overseen by our Board. FIS is Member led. The Board meet physically quarterly (we try to all make it, but if necessary people can log in) and occasionally we have an online meeting if there is something important that we need to discuss. I can't promise you extravagant lunches, a stipend or generous expenses, but if you want to help make a difference in your industry, get involved in setting a direction and ensuring that your trade body is working for your community then I can promise you that being on the FIS Board is an interesting and rewarding leadership role. You can nominate yourself. The next two years will be pivotal for construction, for the finishes and interiors sector and you can help shape our future. Earlier this month, I had the pleasure of taking part in the BigFeat Events Big Night Out trail run in Winchester. The experience was like no other: running through woodlands, fields, and tracks, all in the dark with glow sticks lighting the way and neon face paint adding to the fun. The best part? Finishing the race overlooking the beautiful city of Winchester with fireworks lighting up the sky! 🎇 But, as exhilarating as the experience was, it reminded me of something important: **preparation is key to success**, whether you’re running a race or stepping into a managerial role. Just like training for a challenging trail run, becoming a new manager requires the right preparation. It’s not just about having the right tools; it’s about understanding the terrain, knowing how to navigate through the bumps and turns, and being ready for the unexpected. The race was a test of endurance, focus, and strategy—qualities that are equally important in leadership. And let’s talk about the reward. After crossing the finish line, the satisfaction of earning that shiny medal and feeling a true sense of achievement was incredible. This week, I had the chance to join an aspirant programme for future Chief Executives. Walking to the location of our event, you cannot miss the presence of the Shard as you pound the pavements around London Bridge. This building always interests me towering with other iconic buildings in London's skyline, but unlike some buildings - every picture and every angle I see of it is different. The Shard is multi-faceted, much like today's leader: ✨ It's bold - like the Shard’s design, great leadership means being unafraid to try something different and stand by your vision, and gain followers. ✨ It's strong and steady, and embodies a modern age - leadership isn’t always easy, but like the Shard’s solid foundations, staying grounded and resilient is the key in the face of emerging challenges. ✨ It celebrates uniqueness - in a city of tall buildings, the Shard owns its space. As leaders, we should embrace our individuality and bring that to the table, and surround ourselves with people that are different. ✨ It stands out - leadership is about making an impact and being heard, even in a crowded space.
