The time of life or death for Kyivites between the air alerts lasted for 7 hours. Thankfully today’s attack did not result in deaths, like a few weeks ago when the unit of children’s hospital got destroyed. Today, the Inspectors General for the Department of State, Department of Defense, and U.S. Agency for International Development issued the Special Inspector General for Operation Atlantic Resolve's "Report to the United States Congress, Including U.S. Government Activities Related to Ukraine: January 1-March 31, 2024." The report addresses the status of the U.S.'s response to Russia's war in Ukraine, new U.S. and EU funding; war crimes and human rights violations Russia and its proxies have perpetrated; and, the impact of sanctions on Russian corporations and individuals. It also addresses U.S. and Ukraine efforts to address endemic corruption, rebuild Ukraine's critical infrastructure, address food insecurity, and counter Russian propaganda and disinformation. https://lnkd.in/ejeVSzan

Partners in Crime: EU complicity in Israel’s genocide in Gaza - 4 June 2024 📍 Since 7 October, the EU has approved 130 Horizon Europe research projects involving Israeli entities in receipt of €126 million.  Israel Aerospace Industries, one of Israel’s largest arms companies, got almost €640,000, while Israel’s Ministry of Health got almost €1 million. 📍 The closest form of security cooperation between EU and Israeli entities takes place in the field of research and innovation (R&I). Since 2007, 84 Israeli entities have earned €69.39 million from 132 security projects under the EU’s R&I framework programmes. 📍 One such project, approved after 7 October, involves various European partners and Israel’s Reichman University and Counter-Terrorism Solutions, that work closely with the IOF, and offer services such as ‘war games and simulations’.  The project is worth €2.6 million. 📍 The EU funds arms companies that export weapons to Israel. Companies like Rheinmetall, Leonardo, and others that arm Israel have received public money to the tune of €426 million under the Act in Support of Ammunition Production (ASAP) and the European Defence Fund (EDF). 📌 Germany is Israel’s second-largest arms supplier after the US.  In 2023 German exports to Israel increased tenfold from €32.3 million to €326.5 million with the vast majority of new licences being granted in the period following 7 October. 📌 EU–Israeli relations are underpinned by the Association Agreement, which contains a human rights clause. Had the EU invoked this clause and cut trade ties, imposed an arms embargo and prohibited arms shipments transiting from the US, it may have pressured Israel to shift course. On April 24, 2024, President Biden signed into law a 110-page legislative package that extended the statute of limitations for violations of IEEPA and TWEA; provided military aid for Ukraine, Israel and Taiwan; set the stage for the banning of TikTok, and provided authorities for the eventual confiscation of Russian government assets.    Less reported on are the whopping 37 new “secondary sanctions” and other targeting criteria imposed through eight different statutes within the legislation, almost all most which are effective immediately, even though OFAC will likely not implement them in regulations or provide guidance on them for some time.    Keep track of these 37 new bases for sanctions and nearly 700 others with OverRuled’s OFAC Targeting Tool, which allows users to sort through a comprehensive database of all secondary sanctions and other targeting criteria and retrieve relevant provisions in an instant. #ofac, #sanctions, #overruled
