🌿 Dame Cicely Saunders Had It Right From the Start — The Core Principles of Hospice Care Stand the Test of Time 🌿 After visiting the founding site of the hospice movement, St Christopher's, I find myself deeply moved and reminded of the transformative vision that Dame Cicely Saunders laid out for hospice care. Her belief that care should address the whole person, not just their physical symptoms, continues to resonate today. Dame Cicely’s groundbreaking work on total pain — recognizing that pain is not only physical but also emotional, psychological, and spiritual — revolutionized how we approach care for those at the end of life. It was a profound shift in understanding that to truly serve our patients and their families, we must attend to their complete experience of suffering. This reflection serves as a reminder that in our care practices, we must return to the foundational principles of the hospice movement: compassion, dignity, and holistic care. By addressing total pain and honoring every aspect of a person’s journey, we can ensure that those we serve receive not just treatment, but the true, holistic, and person-centered care that Dame Cicely Saunders taught decades ago — principles that are grounded in culturally safe, harm-reducing, and trauma-informed practices. As we continue to follow Dame Cicely’s example, let us remember that hospice care is about more than simply managing illness — it’s about treating the whole person and recognizing the profound emotional, social, and spiritual dimensions of their experience. #HopeAndHappiness #HospiceCare #TotalPain #DameCicelySaunders #CompassionateCare #HolisticHealth #EndOfLifeCare #HealingThroughCompassion #InnovatingCare SaintElizabethFoundation | SE Health | JourneyHomeHospice Nancy Lefebre | Hana Irving | Felicia Kontopidis

Imitate the practice. 🌱 In hospice care, we can learn a lot from Brené's approach. Creating a safe space for end-of-life discussions involves trust, openness, and a judgment-free zone. 🤗 1. Start with empathy – understand the unique journey of each patient and family. 2. Cultivate openness – encourage sharing feelings without fear of judgment. 3. Foster a supportive environment – ensure everyone feels heard and respected. The results will follow. 🌟 Join our community to normalize the conversation about end-of-life care. 💬 #EndOfLifeCare #HospiceSupport #CompassionateConversations #normalizingtheconversation
