Airdrops are somewhat a unique aspect within crypto where it really tries to benefit the community that helped support and grow it. Pudgy Penguin has had a lot of ups and down and there was a time it was in serious trouble so it’s great to see how far it’s come. But one interesting aspect of airdrops is that it’s silently an amazing user targeting underneath the covers. One of the under appreciated aspects of blockchain is that it’s so transparent which means anyone can see what other wallets are doing. This allows airdrops like this to target the community supporters even though they have no idea who they are. In blockchain gaming the big hype was game asset ownership and I do believe that’s an important aspect (I wrote an entire Naavik deep-dive here: https://lnkd.in/d3nNBq3m). Related to this has been interoperability of the same gaming assets across different ecosystems but I think the real sleeper is covert/vampire targeting like what we see in airdrops. UA especially in mobile is dead the privacy around iOS and Android basically ate the advertising dollars. Mobile gaming companies relying on this stream are dying. So this old world of user targeting is DEAD. What’s fascinating is in the crypto world it’s all transparent and open. So if I want to hunt the whale wallets, I can easily check their on-chain activity. Now I can entice them to my game, my product. Maybe I can tailor their welcome gift based on their previous play (borrowing a strategy from real world casinos) or maybe offer a trade-in for old gaming assets of defunct games. Part of the $PENGU drop is to old FTX FTT bag holders — how cool is that! TLDR; Old world UA game targeting is dead especially on mobile — that world is long gone!
