My dad was the Ambassador of India to Sao Tome & Principe. During the time of his service, he's had the opportunity to experience so many cultures and contribute to them as well. Anyone interested in the life of a diplomat, cultural experiences, personal anecdotes etc. should take a look at his blog. (linked in the shared post). The island of Principe is the smaller and more stunning of the two islands that make up the Republic of Sao Tome and Principe. Discovered in 1471 by Portuguese explorers, Principe is an untouched ecological paradise of the world. As the old twin-prop 18-seat Dornier plane made its slow descent, swathes of virgin forests passed us by on either side, which brought back images from the Jurassic Park movie. Beyond these vast blankets of green cover, I could sight the beautiful white sandy beaches of Principe. My short visit to Principe gave me a genuine sense of escape from civilization. #WildernestGoa #SavingLandsFromMining #Ecotourism An ex-merchant navy friend, Veeresh Malik, an ex-techpreneur and author/columnist, recently shared interesting links about his fellow shippie friend Capt. Nitin Dhond, who turned into an Ecopreneur ! Captain Nitin Pandurang Dhond is a Merchant Navy Captain and has passed out from the Naval academy, T. S. Rajendra in 1977-78. He has to his credit the distinction of working with many international shipping companies, founded a software company and much else. Captain Nitin divides his time between the sea and Wildernest Nature resort, which is his dream project. Wildernest nature resort supports and sustains one of India’s first and finest private sanctuaries. It comprises 700 acres of Western Ghats / Sahyadri forests and includes evergreen forests, high altitude grassland ecosystems, waterfalls and caves. These forests are ecologically important and are the catchment area for the Haltar nallah and the Valvanti River, both tributaries of the Mhadei river. This is a secure wildlife corridor that allows for the free movement of large mammals like tigers, leopards and wild dogs between the tri-state boundaries of Goa, Karnataka and Maharashtra. "It all began some three decades ago when our ancestral lands in Belgaum were acquired for mining,” Capt. Dhond tells me, “and I bought some 15 acres here in the 90’s out of sentimentality and the need to own a piece of land and build my own house.” Later he discovered that the lands, agricultural and privately owned, were being bought over for mining. “I spoke to the owners and showed them what mining had done to our lands. Slowly I convinced them not to sell to the miners and bought over the lands and reforested those which had been logged. Now it is completely forested and deemed forest land.”" Read the story from 2015: https://lnkd.in/gdpt3e7Q As part of a group, which established the Mhadei Research Center, one of the first field research stations in the region, his work has been recognized by the state as national agencies. In 2010 he was awarded the Konkan Ratna award. Read more on Captain Nitin and the sea and river cruises his company offers in Goa. https://lnkd.in/ggK_zAYe A slope train was conceptualized, designed, and operated as a unique experience at Wildernest Nature Resort, Chorla Ghats, Goa in 2022. Capt. Nitin Dhond, whose brainchild this is, believes that this model can be replicated across Goa as well as India to solve forest access issues as well as provide forest canopy views for eco-tourists without disturbing the habitats. It is the first indigenously designed operational slope train in India. This slope train covers a distance of approximately 110 meters through the forest canopy and provides a 360 view of the magnificent VazraSakla falls on one side and the Mhadei wildlife sanctuary on the other. An exquisite image of a large, male gorilla captured by @richard.degouveia Gorillas can be found in both Uganda and Rwanda and generally guests choose the country based on the experience they want to have and want they want to explore. Rwanda is seen as the much more expensive cousin of Uganda, with lodges catering to the upper echelons of society and those seeking a more luxurious landing. Rwanda’s park fees and permits are also significantly more expensive than Uganda. But not to be outdone, Uganda is a bit little grittier but no less sensational than Rwanda. What differs is also the ecosystems and habitats of where the gorillas live. The main difference is the landscape and vegetation. Rwanda’s Volcanoes National Park is part of a dormant volcanic mountain range known as the Virungas, where gorillas primarily inhabit the a dense, bamboo forest zone. This setting provides open vegetation, making it ideal for easy, clear viewing of the gorillas. But in contrast, Uganda’s Bwindi Impenetrable National Park is a tropical rainforest, which can sometimes make it more challenging to obtain clear views of the gorillas due to the denser vegetation but no less exciting. As it’s a rainforest, the cacophony of ‘jungle’ sounds is simply stunning as is the ecosystems that jostle together here. Rwanda has 12 trackable gorilla groups, while Uganda has over 25 groups in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park and one group in Mgahinga Gorilla National Park. Uganda also offers more options for a broader safari experience, including Murchison Falls and Queen Elizabeth National Parks, while Rwanda is less established as a stand-alone safari destination but has some off-the-beaten-track gems. Best Time to Go you ask? The best time for gorilla trekking in both countries is during the dry seasons, from May/June to September and then December to February. What month is it now? Ohhhh June? We’re completely booked for this year, but there is always next year or 2026… #arcearth #travelwithpurpose #gorilla #gorillatrekking #rwanda #uganda #bwindi #volcanoesnationalpark #volcanoesnationalpark #virungas

Q: Want to visit Pench national park. Not able to understand which gate to choose for stay ? Ans: At Pench national park, stay options are available close to many entry gates like Touria gate, Karmajhiri gate, Jamtara gate, Sillari gate, Khursapar gate etc. Major concentration of hotels & resorts is close to Touria gate this is because of visitor's demand. It has strong & justified reasons. One of the major cause is availability of many safari zones which increases variation in safaris, high probability to explore most happening parts of forest and surrounding ambience. Touria gate allows easy access to popular safari zones like Touria zone, Khawasa zone (good for night safaris), Teliya zone, Rukhad zone, Khursapar zone and one can also cover Sillari zone. Here surrounding area is forested which gives impression of true wildlife holiday experience. Other entry gate like Karmajhiri, Khursapar etc. approach route is such that we struggle to find a forested patch, whole route is surrounded by villages, high density of human presence, makes us feel as if we are on wildlife trip or village visit tour. Stay options are also not available in different budget categories. If the nearby core zone is sold out then other zones are too far thus unable to add variations. Thus we give stays near Touria gate resorts to give best safari variations to our guests even if they are late in planning, we arrange core zone safaris for them as we have more options in hand. #penchnationalpark #resorts #touria #karmajhiri #sillari #rukhad #penchtigerreserve #tigersafari #tour Sarah B.
