Old Man’s Valley, part of the Hornsby Park project, will come alive as a vibrant Field of Play thanks to a Thriving Communities grant from the Australian Government.   With over 7,000 square metres of new multipurpose recreational green space it will include:  👉A playing field for a range of recreational activities 👉Accessible amenities, including car parking, bathroom facilities, change rooms, picnic hubs, and a dog exercise area  👉Bike pump track - a circuit track used by mountain bikes and BMX, skateboards and wheelchairs. 👉Activations and cultural events   The project has been provided $12 million, to be matched by Council through development contributions.   Hornsby Park, a major recreation destination, is being created on the site of the former Hornsby Quarry. It will feature approximately 60 hectares of bushland and open space and include features of historical and community interest.   As per the Master Plan adopted in July 2021, Hornsby Park will be delivered in stages. Exciting news! The Downers Grove Park District has been awarded a $600,000 OSLAD grant from the Illinois Department of Natural Resources for the McCollum Park Playground Improvement Project! Announced by Governor JB Pritzker on Dec. 16, this grant is part of over $55.2 million awarded to 100 local park agencies to enhance recreational opportunities. What’s Coming? The McCollum Park Playground, last updated in 2005, will receive a major upgrade to improve recreation, accessibility, and fun for everyone! Last April, the final product was unveiled: təməsew̓txʷ (pronounced Thomas-out) Aquatic and Community Centre, a 115,000-square-foot facility home to an Olympic-sized lap pool, a lazy river, a leisure pool, fitness rooms, childcare facilities and a soaring, 30-foot lobby that doubles as an admission-free hangout space for visitors. With a price tag of $107 million, it’s the city’s most expensive capital project to date. təməsew̓txʷ is also the first aquatic centre in the country to earn a zero-carbon design designation. Unlike other public pools, which can be notorious greenhouse-gas emitters and typically rely on gas boilers to heat water, təməsew̓txʷ runs partially on solar panels. Above the lap pool, a wooden, zig-zagging sawtooth roof lets in plenty of indirect daylight, preventing a glare from bouncing off the water. In fact, the entire facility is extremely wood-heavy, from its hulking cross-laminated timber ceiling (which can tolerate lots of humidity and unintentionally resembles a gym floor) to its central spiralling, maple-wrapped staircase.

Pātaua Outdoor Education & Recreation Trust (POERT) offers a self-catering school camp facility on the east coast of Northland, providing educational organisations and groups with an immersive outdoor experience. Established in 1979, POERT focuses on providing affordable, high-quality venues for schools and communities, particularly those facing financial challenges. After 40 years, POERT is undergoing a $4 million staged redevelopment, with $1.8 million already secured for Stage 1. Key improvements include a new wastewater system, upgraded kitchen, and temporary facilities. Stage 2 will see the construction of new buildings and sports courts, and the installation of electricity supply for campers. Gunson McLean has been involved in the Trust’s activities for the past eight years, managing financial matters and supporting the redevelopment.
