In tech, demonstrating success is not about implementing products it’s about helping clients drive valuable technology-enabled change. This is what your PS team should be positioned to do, if you want to win more and grow more. Competing on product can be tough. If your PS offerings are commodity, low-value technical configuration packages, then they are not helping you win in the market and are creating the opportunity for competitors to outmanoeuvre you. Here are some things that I’ve found work: ✅ 𝐒𝐡𝐢𝐟𝐭 𝐟𝐫𝐨𝐦 𝐈𝐦𝐩𝐥𝐞𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐭𝐨 𝐕𝐚𝐥𝐮𝐞 𝐃𝐞𝐥𝐢𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐲 Clients want to see clear, measurable outcomes from their investment. Shifting the mission of the PS team from a focus on implementing products to delivering valued outcomes will differentiate you and build trust with prospects. It also prevents a gap forming between the value-driven messaging of Sales and the actual post-sales delivery activity. Your offerings and methods must support this approach. ✅ 𝐈𝐧𝐯𝐞𝐬𝐭 𝐢𝐧 𝐓𝐫𝐚𝐢𝐧𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐃𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐥𝐨𝐩𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭 Provide training programs that help ensure that consultants are not just technical experts but also skilled in solving business challenges. This dual expertise is what most clients are looking for when they make investment decisions on product. It also helps you with employee engagement and retention. ✅ 𝐅𝐨𝐫𝐦 𝐚 𝐏𝐨𝐢𝐧𝐭 𝐨𝐟 𝐕𝐢𝐞𝐰 Waiting for the customer to define a problem is a reactive approach. Help them explore the issue and lead with a point of view on how problems emerge in this area and how you’ve tackled this before. Only PS has credible insight into this, based on actual experience. This proactive engagement with PS builds trust and positions you as a reliable partner in the client's success. ✅ 𝐅𝐨𝐜𝐮𝐬 𝐨𝐧 𝐌𝐞𝐚𝐬𝐮𝐫𝐚𝐛𝐥𝐞 𝐎𝐮𝐭𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐞𝐬 Communicate the success of your PS engagements internally and externally. If you're only tracking and reporting on bookings, revenue and billable utilisation, you're undervaluing the contribution of PS by a significant amount. At a minimum look at reporting on PS-qualified leads (see Preethie Vimalan's recent post for insight on this) and move towards having a balanced scorecard to reflect the breadth of contribution that your PS team makes. 𝑫𝒐 𝒕𝒉𝒊𝒔 𝒓𝒊𝒈𝒉𝒕 𝒂𝒏𝒅 𝒚𝒐𝒖 𝒘𝒊𝒍𝒍 𝒇𝒊𝒏𝒅 𝒕𝒉𝒂𝒕 𝑷S is 𝒂 𝒉𝒊𝒈𝒉𝒍𝒚 𝒆𝒇𝒇𝒆𝒄𝒕𝒊𝒗𝒆 𝒘𝒂𝒚 𝒕𝒐 𝒅𝒊𝒇𝒇𝒆𝒓𝒆𝒏𝒕𝒊𝒂𝒕𝒆 𝒊𝒏 𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝒕𝒆𝒄𝒉 𝒎𝒂𝒓𝒌𝒆𝒕 𝒕𝒐𝒅𝒂𝒚.
