We’re thrilled to see Hallfield School’s new classrooms taking shape with just over a month left until handover. Weedon Architects has been collaborating with Hallfield School since 2015, delivering various refurbishment projects across the campus. This project, however, is our most notable yet. We extend our thanks to the School, Headmaster, Governors, and all key staff members at Hallfield for their support in bringing this innovative design forward. Inspired by the School’s landscape, our design echoes the trees within the Quad and surrounding areas, enhancing the connection with nature. The elevated site inspired a tree house concept, which is reflected in the playful design, oversized picture windows that foster a dialogue between the interior and exterior, and the use of exposed engineered timber. Our excitement in developing this design with Hallfield School has continued as we assist Tyto Contracting on-site to bring this vision to life. Stay tuned for more updates as we approach the final stages of this incredible project! High-rise buildings, which are the basis of today’s commercial architecture, not only create the faces of cities but are also examples of successful cooperation between engineers, architects, and workers. Take, for example, a professional paper writing service and ask them to write an article about architecture; you will have to specify which side to look at this subject from because it ranges from historical to quite specific engineering aspects. Today, we will discuss the history of high-rise buildings, the development of construction technologies, and, most importantly, the current trends in structural engineering, which allow us to create beautiful, safe, and energy-efficient buildings. #HighRiseDesign #BuildingTrends #ArchitectureTrends #UrbanDesign #SustainableArchitecture #SkyscraperDesign

Building for Tomorrow, Today: The Power of Lifespan Design at RDK ♻️ At RDK Civil Engineering, we believe in creating structures that are not only functional and aesthetically pleasing, but also adaptable and sustainable throughout their lifespan. That's why we champion the concept of Lifespan Design. What is Lifespan Design? Lifespan Design is a holistic approach to building that considers the entire lifecycle of a structure, from planning and construction to operation, renovation, and potential future uses. Why Choose Lifespan Design with RDK? Adaptable Spaces: We design spaces that can be easily modified to accommodate changing needs and uses over time, extending the lifespan of the building. Sustainable Practices: We prioritize energy-efficient materials, systems, and features, minimizing environmental impact throughout the building's life cycle. Future-Proofed Designs: We consider potential future trends and technologies, ensuring your structure remains relevant and functional for years to come. Reduced Long-Term Costs: By designing for adaptability and sustainability, we help you minimize future renovation and maintenance costs. The Benefits are Clear: By partnering with RDK for Lifespan Design, you'll benefit from: Reduced environmental impact Increased building value Enhanced flexibility and functionality Lower long-term costs Ready to build for the future? The Grenfell tragedy underscores the vital role of collaboration and expert knowledge within the construction ecosystem, writes Ben Flatman. The final report of the Grenfell Tower Inquiry is not just a reckoning for those directly involved in the disastrous refurbishment – it’s a wake-up call for the entire architectural profession. What is now painfully clear is that the failures that contributed to the 2017 fire, which claimed 72 lives, reflect not just technical errors but a fundamental erosion of professional responsibility and expertise. In an echo of Dame Judith Hackitt’s 2018 Independent Review of Building Regulations and Fire Safety, the Grenfell Inquiry report underlines the urgent need for reform within the profession, highlighting the importance of education, training, and a renewed commitment to the technical and ethical dimensions of practice within architecture, and across the industry. From an architectural perspective, perhaps the most damning indictment in the report was that reserved for Studio E, the practice tasked with designing the refurbishment. The Inquiry found that Studio E “fell well below the standard to be expected of a reasonably competent architect.” This was not a one-off mistake; it was a systemic failure – a failure to understand the responsibility architects carry and the technical rigour required for such a complex project. This should serve as a stark reminder for all of us: safety, regulations, and technical expertise cannot be afterthoughts. While we know that there are many practices and indivudal architects that take their professional responsibilities profoundly seriously, the report asks whether the example of Studio E’s professional neglicence suggests a more widespread issue reflecting a casual attitude to building regulations and safety. And if so, does this culture stem from an attitude around architectural education and training - including continuing professional development (CPD) - that has for decades often appeared to lack focus on fundamental competencies and the importance of regulatory compliance? Grenfell’s legacy should be a recommitment to safety and professionalism across our industry

Dutch architect Powerhouse Company has revealed its #design for a modular #timber, 82-unit social housing project in #Rotterdam that it says is demountable. The 12-storey, 40m-high Valckensteyn #housing block will be built in Pendrecht, a southern suburb of Rotterdam built during the city’s post-war #reconstruction, and now suffering from social deprivation. The largest timber #building of its kind in the #Netherlands, it will occupy the site of an earlier social housing #project of the same name. Stefan Prins, the lead #architect, said the aim of the design was to “showcase the harmony of concrete stability and wooden #innovation, where #sustainability meets affordability”. About 85% of the building will be taken up by the timber elements, stiffened by a #concrete elevator core. The timber #structure will be light enough to use the old #foundations, thereby cutting out a whole package of works. The building itself will be built up from a range of factory-fabricated cross-laminated-timber modules laid on a plinth clad in travertine, a sedimentary rock. These are assembled without the use of glue, meaning the building can be demounted rather than #demolished at the end of its life. The lower storeys have floor-to-ceiling windows, and the flats on the western #facade have wide balconies. The flower gardens and arboretum were designed by Rotterdam firm LAP Landscape & Urban Design with #biodiversity in mind. The client for the project is the Woonstad Rotterdam Housing Corporation. Dutch engineer IOB handles the structural and #MEP elements, and was also the #QS. The #cost of the project has not been revealed.
