This is great news and I am certainly in favour of more trade-based apprenticeships BUT... can we just take a moment to consider the imbalance in funding... Level 3 Craft Painter and Decorator = £12,000. Level 3 Lead Adult Care Worker = £4,000. I'll just let that sit for a minute. A health and social care assessor will typically have a caseload of up to 80 learners. You can't possibly do everything you need to do training wise in one session a month and anyway, despite the shift from evidence-based NVQs to apprenticeship standards, assessors aren't qualified teachers -they are assessors- and they aren't going to become teachers because the lack of funding means providers can't necessarily afford to put them through the relevant qualifications because they are needed out in the field. These are the people who are responsible for training the person who is looking after your mum or your gran when they can't take care of themselves and we are telling them that they aren't worth investing in. Poor funding actually kills people. Sort it out UKGov.
As Chair of the Painting & Decorating Trailblazer Group I’m delighted to share that the new L3 Craft Painter & Decorator Standard in England has been approved for delivery and is now listed on the IfATE (Institute for Apprenticeships and Technical Education) website. The Department for Education has agreed a funding cap of £12k which we hope will encourage Training Providers to put L3 back on the curriculum. https://lnkd.in/eqeeefB6 A huge thank you to everyone that has contributed to this outcome. Nicola Jordan & Karen Wright from the Institute. Ann Cook. (Ann Cook Associates), Peter Walters MBE (representing the Association of Painting Craft Teachers in the UK) Sian Pearce (Ian Williams Ltd), Ellie Jobes & Jane Potter (Bagnalls) Steve Timbrell (P&S Timbrell), Simon Martin (Rowe Martin Ltd), steve Bennett (S&C Painting Services LTD), Neil Ogilvie and wider members of The Painting and Decorating Association. Special thanks to @Sean Nugent CITB for his invaluable experience and input during this process. A timely result for the Trailblazer Group based on the recent Government announcements & forthcoming changes to the UK Skills landscape. Roofing Apprenticeship Day: Back to Basics, Building Solid Foundations at Redcar & Cleveland College Today was all about revisiting and reinforcing the essentials with our roofing apprentices. We started with a revision of last week’s Abrasive Wheels session and moved on to some hands-on training. The practical part of the morning focused on changing blades safely in cut-off saws and ensuring the apprentices are confident in safe cutting practices. Safety is always a priority, so we followed that up with training on working at heights and ladder safety. For the second half of the day, the apprentices tackled a wet verge with single lap tiles, getting hands-on with verge to verge installation. I also ran a masterclass demo on bedding ridge tiles, showing them how it’s done. (Not gonna lie it felt good showing them and they were well impressed once I finished laying ridge tiles proud teaching moment) A big shout-out to Ubbink UK Ltd Chris Green for supplying goodie bags and loads of materials! 🙌 Your support made today even better for our apprentices. I’ll try to take some photos next time—as you can imagine, it’s been a busy day! And It’s crucial that we master the fundamentals of roofing—like marking out and gauging tiles, or what I like to call the Bobby Basics—before we take on more complex and challenging roofs. Laying strong foundations today builds confident and skilled roofers tomorrow! 💪🏽 #RoofingApprentices #RoofingTraining #SafetyFirst #HandsOnLearning #BuildingTheFuture #RoofingFundamentals #SkillsDevelopment #ThankYouUbbink Connor Greet Emma Booth NFRC Roofing Today Magazine

Interesting take on the current situation in the trades.
We help the skilled trades to stop chasing what they need. We simply fetch it for them | Speaker #tradesadvocacy | Host of the Lost Art of the Skilled Trades Podcast | Co-founder CEO of Toolfetch
Carpenters are a dying breed. Guess what, it's your house that will pay the price. For every 5 tradesperson retiring only 2 are coming into the workforce. To bridge this gap, we need a shift. Improved training, industry regulation, and fair wages are crucial. Look at plumbing, electrical, and HVAC fields—they're thriving with clear apprenticeships and promising careers. We have to make carpentry cool once again. Decent incomes can draw in new talent. A proactive approach ensures a future where carpenters are valued and well-compensated. Let's act now to change this narrative! 🛠️🏡 Engage in solutions: - Invest in long-term training - Advocate for fair wages - Promote the craft's value With these steps, we can turn the tide. Carpenters deserve recognition and respect. Together, we can build a brighter future for this essential trade. 💪🌟 #skilledtrades #jointhetrades #bluecollar #STAC ↗ Hey, I'm Andrew I post every day at 8am est. ↗ My podcast The Lost Art Of The Skilled Trades: https://lnkd.in/eZu5_T4w ↗ Join the trades movement: https://lnkd.in/eSqJzG9j ↗ Follow me Andrew Brown
