There are 2 separate union issue happening at Canada West Coast a. TCRC breakdown in negotiation with CN and CPCK (rail companies), highly likely CIRB will issue findings that strike by TCRC will not impact critical services; TCRC is already proceeding with strike vote (due 29 Jun) to ensure they could call for strike (w 72 hrs prior notice) in Jul 2024. The current strike mandate is valid till 30 Jun 2024. b. ILWU Local Chapter 514 refuse to accept BCMEA final offer and vote to strike was completed on 15 Jun 2024; The impact will be more pinpoint to DP World Vancouver Centerm terminal. This will take some time to play out as CIRB is call to intervene in the negotiation. All in all, eventful summer peak is coming ... As any disruption to PNW will be felt by PSW, adding onto the lack of progress on US East Coast/Gulf Coast between ILA and USMX. Plus resumption of Red Sea conflict in the background.

Ports on Strike Beginning OCT 1st: As we have been monitoring, an ILU strike is inbound. Set to start October 1st on Tuesday causing the closure of ports on the East Coast And Gulf coast. There is a common consensus of hope for the negotiations to be completed in a timely manner. Ocean carriers have already announced additional surcharges for export cargo and the sooner this can be resolved the less disruptive it may be. But we should be ready for some market volatility. This is a very important situation to monitor as carriers are already weighing the potential shortages caused by the strikes disruptions. Mentioning the potential for extended capacity shortages reaching into 2025. Ocean Network Express (ONE) has even announced that it will skip Charleston and Savannah on its trans-pacific EC1 service. A metric for the disruption is as follows: 1 day stoppage could cause a 6-7 day recovery. While a two week long disruption could have an extended impact into next year. It is expected that West Coast ports will only be able to absorb about 17-18% of the diverted cargo, with other alternatives such as Mexican or Canadian ports viewed as less able to handle overflow loads. This is the first coastwide longshore work stoppage since 1977. The current update from the providers is that they are exploring mitigation options but are uncertain in their ability to handle the increased volumes. They mention freight rates may rise especially depending on the length of the strike. This is an unfortunate foreshadowing of what may come, so please be informed and if you have any questions let us know. https://lnkd.in/e8Sdxx8x

USMX chief meets with Biden administration officials as port strike deadline looms The head of the United States Maritime Alliance (USMX) met with Biden administration officials as a potential East and Gulf Coast dockworker strike looms. USMX Chairman Dave Adam met with Acting Labor Secretary Julie Su, Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg, and Biden economic advisor Lael Brainard. The meeting follows USMX filing a charge against the International Longshoremen’s Association (ILA) for not bargaining in good faith. The Biden administration has not indicated any intention to prevent the strike under the Taft-Hartley Act. #PortStrike #EastCoastPorts #MaritimeLabor #SupplyChain #USMX #BidenAdministration #ILA #LaborNegotiations #Dockworkers Stay Informed: https://lnkd.in/eR2Y5juf

𝗝𝘂𝘀𝘁 𝗼𝗻𝗲 𝘄𝗲𝗲𝗸 𝗹𝗲𝗳𝘁 𝘁𝗼 𝗿𝗲𝘀𝗼𝗹𝘃𝗲 𝗽𝗮𝘆 𝗶𝘀𝘀𝘂𝗲𝘀 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗮𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘁 𝗮 𝗺𝗮𝗷𝗼𝗿 𝗨𝗦 𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁 𝘀𝘁𝗿𝗶𝗸𝗲! As we head into the one of the busiest times of the year for retail, the major strike planned for US East and Gulf Coast ports on 1st October is still likely to go ahead as no agreement to avert the disruption has been reached. If an agreement isn't reached, tens of thousands of International Longshoremen’s Association (ILA) maritime workers at ports across the USA will begin striking on 1st October – the first national longshoremen's strike since 1977. The issues have arisen following the expiration of a six-year master contract between the ILA (the largest union of maritime workers in North America) and the United States Maritime Alliance (covering the East and Gulf Coast ports). The contract includes 30 ports - six of the 10 busiest US ports - which collectively handle more than 13 million containers annually. We’ll continue to monitor the situation and provide further details and developments on the planned strikes. What products would be disrupted by a port strike? ILA dockworkers union and the USMX group of port employers are at an impasse with a strike looming on Oct. 1 One-half of the seaborne imports to the U.S. are shipped through the 36 ports that would be impacted by a strike that may begin on Oct. 1. It would be the first strike by the International Longshoremen's Association (ILA), which represents the port workers, since 1977. The union and the U.S. Maritime Alliance (USMX), which represents port employers, are at an impasse over wages in a new contract. As of Sunday, talks between the ILA and USMX appeared to be at a standstill, with each issuing statements about the impasse. #portstrike #supplychaindistruption #containershipping https://lnkd.in/gJTgQs_M

BREAKING NEWS: U.S. Port Strike Ends! The International Longshoremen’s Association (ILA) strike, which affected 36 major ports along the East and Gulf coasts, has come to an end. The strike, involving 45,000 workers, halted operations for several days over disputes about wages and automation concerns. A tentative agreement has been reached with the United States Maritime Alliance (USMX), leading to a significant wage increase for the workers and an extension of the current master contract until January 15, 2025, allowing further negotiations. The resolution helps to avert further disruptions to the U.S. supply chain, which had raised concerns about potential shortages of key goods ahead of the holiday season. CBSA STRIKE At, Cargo Partners International Inc, we are very hopeful that strike which was anticipated to begin tomorrow will not take place. Reality is, the clock is ticking and the Liberal government needs to revisit current contracts “Although supply chain disruptions at any time are not a good thing, the current timing of this potential border disruption is particularly problematic as trucking continues to grapple with ongoing volatility throughout the sector – including significant retirements and loss of labor/capital productivity because of federal legislation governing sick days.”cit The border delays will have an impact to crucial sectors such as automotive and others dependent on just-in-time delivery systems, it could jeopardize thousands of Canadian jobs. CBSA spokesperson, Luke Reimer, said that while the agency respects the Charter-protected right of employees to strike and to participate in lawful activities associated with collective bargaining, the border will ‘remain open and safe’. “Ninety percent of all frontline border services officers are essential workers. It is a waiting game to see the outcome if such strike, will take place.”

** US East/Gulf Coast Port Strike Action and disruptions caused ** To keep all our customers and partners updated, unfortunately the discussions between the labour unions and US East Coast Terminals have failed to find a solution to their disagreement, and therefore strikes are currently taking place in major East Coast ports of the USA. This is the first union strike since 1977. This is expected to have significant effects on supply chains, with possible lengthy delays incurred on some time critical deliveries, vessels schedules being disrupted (35 vessels were due to arrive in the striking ports during the period mentioned), and equipment being being trapped in the ports (Expected approx 100,000 containers prevented from being moved for export, or delivered for import), or onboard vessels. Some of these vessels will remain at anchor, whilst others will either omit their calls at those ports, or attempt to dock elsewhere to offload cargo which will be moved on at a later date. This is therefore going to be a challenging situation for anyone who has cargo moving through those ports and we will do everything we can to support our customers during this time. If you have cargo which you have cargo which you believe may be impacted you should hear from one of our team shortly. #thisisphaon #eastcoaststrikes #seafreight
