Last week, our maintenance manager and I met with a technical rep from a national electrical supply company that also has a local storefront. They are interested in servicing our data, communications, and electrical component needs because they know their largest competitor is our current vendor (also with a local storefront). While doing introductions, I asked our maintenance manager to lead off. After all, if we work with this company, he will likely be a point of contact. He introduces himself, "I am Brian, Maintenance Manager. I oversee the maintenance, electrical, and instrumentation for our two treatment plants, 51 source water wells, and our 10 remote pumping sites, and 10 storage tanks in the city." The tech rep thanks him and looks to me. I introduce myself, "I am Christine, Plant Manager. I oversee the operations and maintenance at the two treatment plants and the support facilities in the city." Immediately after my introduction, he says, "wow, that's a big responsibility," with a look of skepticism. A couple of take-aways and wonder from brief introductions -The tech rep requested the meeting with ME, he should know my role when he arrives. Also, we provided him with business cards that he could reference prior to the introduction. -Yes, the plant manager role IS a big responsibility, no denying that. BUT, I surround myself with people who are smarter than me! They make me look good! -While I am not in any way discounting the experience of our maintenance manager, he's a great person and leads a great team, the tech rep had no idea what my background is. I have over 2x the years of experience as a leader in an industrial setting than the maintenance manager. -Arguably, our maintenance manager has a MASSIVE responsibility, why was there no comment about that to him? He simply gave a thank you for the introduction. BTW- our maintenance team kills it on the daily under his leadership! I am not, at all, a title person. I believe we win together at the water treatment plant. It takes ALL of us! In fact, when I am asked in public what 'I do for a living' I typically respond with, "I work for the City of Cedar Rapids Water Treatment Plant." I leave the title out. I am part of a TEAM. I am just blessed to have the role of helping them find necessary resources to be a Kick-Butt team every single day! I can't help but wonder how many times this rep looks across a table at a female leader with a skeptical look about her abilities and unknowingly offends her because he has a gender bias. Maybe it is because I paint my nails! 😁 #DoBetter
