Did you know a whopping 97% of the USA is considered "rural" and approximately 19% of the overall population lives in these areas according to the National Rural Health Administration. Folks living in rural areas face many challenges such as increased chronic disease rates, healthcare access issues, underinsured or no insurance, and increased mental health concerns. What is particularly interesting about this CMS report is the emphasis on data - access, utilization and reporting. Particularly as we focus on alternate models of delivery and funding in the rural and community setting. Having spent a lot of time with these hospitals, I know first hand how resource constricted may of them are (financial, technological, human and skills). A recent CHCF survey reveals stark disparities in health care access for Central Valley residents. The recent symposium in Fresno brought together community leaders, health advocates, and experts to address the findings: • 56% believe their communities lack sufficient mental health providers • 48% carry medical debt (vs. 36% statewide) • 35% report increasing difficulty accessing affordable, quality care • 50% face unreasonable wait times for physical health appointments • 78% have a regular doctor (vs. 85% statewide) These findings underscore the urgent need for targeted solutions to improve health care access and affordability in the Central Valley.
