Policy News ➪ House Farm Bill Misses Opportunity to Move Agriculture Forward On Friday, May 17, the House Agriculture Committee released the long-awaited Farm, Food, and National Security Act of 2024 (FFNSA). The National Sustainable Agriculture Coalition argues that the House's 942 page discussion draft Farm Bill misses an opportunity to move agriculture forward. 💬 “The Farm, Food, and National Security Act fundamentally fails to meet the moment. The bill dramatically increases subsidies yet takes no meaningful steps toward building a fair, responsible, and accessible farm safety net. It stubbornly dismisses climate change – in part by decoupling the climate-focus from conservation investments – while countless farmers and ranchers nationwide experience the worsening impacts of a changing climate. And although the bill reflects some lessons from the pandemic, its vision for the future of local and regional food systems is stunted,” said Mike Lavender, National Sustainable Agriculture Coalition Policy Director. A study conducted in Delta, BC found that enrolment in agricultural stewardship programs improved on-farm climate mitigation and adaptation. Farms experienced an increase in soil organic carbon stocks by 60-70% and improved soil water regulation. Agricultural stewardship programs can help incentivize positive environmental change by helping farmers cover the cost of practices such as growing cover crops and establishing hedgerows. 📣The Farm Bill expired over six months ago, and we’re still many hard conversations away from a new bill. One of the principal fault lines facing members of Congress is the tension between increased spending on the farm safety net (crop insurance and commodity supports) and preserving the Inflation Reduction Act’s historic investment in conservation. Congress has not identified enough funding to do both, so elected officials are aligning with one camp or the other.
