Wildfires in New York and New Jersey have brought the realities of poor air quality close to home. Smoke from the fires has led to significant declines in air quality across the region, posing serious health risks, especially for those with asthma, allergies, or other respiratory conditions. These fires highlight the need for awareness and timely responses as conditions can change rapidly. Fine particulate matter (PM2.5) in smoke not only irritates the throat and eyes but can also trigger more severe respiratory and cardiovascular issues. Our hearts are with all of the affected communities currently facing these wildfires. There are several wildfires taking over Alberta and surrounding areas severely right now. We hope that all get out safely and to safety as quickly as possible. To the communities of Jasper, Fort McMurray, Fox Lake, John D'Or, Fort McKay, and others... we are with you. Working in the smoke laden 'fresh air' can cause serious respiratory health issues if not taken care of properly. As we know, smoke can impact each person differently. Here are some Artis x ACSA recommendations for employers with workers working outside: - Ensure you set up reprieve stations or areas where workers can go inside filtered areas for a break. - Ensure that you are conducting the required hazard assessment and reviewing the air quality index daily and throughout the day. - Reschedule work if it is not possible to mitigate hazards. - Utilize Respiratory Protective Equipment like respirators for workers who are required to work long hours in the smoke filled air. - Encourage workers with respiratory illnesses, sensitivities, or who have smoke allergies to notify their managers so that they can have their needs accommodated. Managing workplace health hazards when you work outside is an ever changing and constantly evolving process. Ensure you are regularly checking the status of the weather, air quality, etc. and updating the controls as needed. #workplacesafety #wildfires #albertafires #firesafety #respiratorysafety #smokesafety #Artisconsulting #yeglocal #edmontonlocal #albertawide #disabilitymanagement #workplaceaccommodation

Clean window screens are essential for maintaining your home's air quality, natural light, insect control, and energy efficiency. Dirty screens can accumulate dust and pollen that cause allergies and block natural light, reducing brightness and warmth. Regular cleaning can minimize allergens and maximize natural light. Well-maintained screens can also keep insects out and promote better airflow, helping to reduce energy bills. Ti’s the season for Legionnaires outbreaks! Officials are warning of a recent outbreak in downtown Lincoln, New Hampshire, infecting five individuals near the RiverWalk Resort's cooling tower. If you were within a half-mile radius, monitor your health closely. As a result of the outbreak the resort could face liability for third-party bodily injury claims due to the bacteria. Most pollution policies cover Legionnaires, but having one in place is crucial for it to respond. Please contact Jared Dubrowsky or Christopher Alviggi if you dont have a policy to safeguard against unforeseen pollution exposures.
