I'm extremely proud to share The Tower Companies latest Corporate Sustainability Report, highlighting both our recent work and our goals for the future. Some highlights below: Our operating energy use and emissions continue to drop; we've achieved a 54% reduction in Scope 1 and 2 emissions since measurements began in 2010. That's a bit ahead of where we all need to be by 2030 to follow the Paris Agreement. Check out our sections on electricity and gas usage to learn how we've achieved these reductions! Over 90,000 pounds of food waste are composted annually as part of the composting programs across our buildings; that directly reduces methane production/leakage from landfills. Check out the included links to our case study of composting in multifamily buildings to see what our rollout looked like, and let me know if you want to chat more about it! Our 2,615 solar panels are slated to produce approximately 1 gigawatt of annual generation--and yes, I do hope we can eventually hit 1.21 gigawatts to make Doc Brown proud. Recent plans for a gas-fired power plant and concrete crushing activity at the former Seiont Brickworks near Caernarfon have sparked significant concern among local residents and environmental campaigners - and with us, as a local business. As highlighted by Arfon MS Sian Gwenllian, these proposals seem to contradict Wales' carbon emission targets and the spirit of the Well-being of Future Generations Act. The potential impacts on air quality, noise levels, traffic, and local wildlife are particularly alarming given the site's proximity to homes, a hospital, and ancient woodland. The company states that this development will complement renewable energy providing a reliable backup - the reality is, however, that there are already better storage solutions which lack the negative effects this plan would have. Batteries, hydrogen, and pump storage all seem likely to be more reasonable, sustainable, forward-thinking solutions. We urge everyone to participate in the ongoing consultation and voice their concerns before it ends on June 14, 2024. This issue isn’t being talked about enough. Embodied carbon cannot remain a ‘maybe explain what you thought about it - maybe do a WLC assessment’ issue for those who seek to lead. The City of Vancouver is leading the charge on enforcing emission regulations in Canada, imposing the first limit on emissions by 2026. We still have much work to do to catch up to US cities implementing #emission regulation, but this is a step in the right direction. While voluntary industry-led certification programs have seen an increase in interest in recent years as we move towards creating #netzero communities, regulations will inspire real change in the #GHG of existing buildings.
