I had a very enjoyable visit to the RHS Chelsea Flower Show 2024 this week and you cannot help but marvel at the beauty and innovation on display at the event as well as the huge numbers of a very engaged and potentially “cash rich” consumer in attendance. But there is a significant gap of those showing at Chelsea to the consumer that you cannot help but notice. That being the limited or non-existent presence of any the horticultural trade groups or any key UK retailers promoting what they sell from the horticultural sectors direct to the UK consumer. Is it just my view that our sectors spend so much time and money promoting ourselves to ourselves at our various niche industry events that don’t have any real relevance to the consumer who ultimately buy the products grown and as such will have the biggest impact on sales? Are we missing an opportunity to increase awareness of the sector and the businesses within it by not being involved with major consumer events such as the Chelsea flower show?
