Many assume that extending the inlet pipe of a hydrocarbon storage tank to the bottom of the tank (dip pipe) has process reasons (e.g. well mixing of fluid, reducing the rate of evaporation due to splashing, etc.). While these reasons remain valid, the main reason is due to safety! Splashing and turbulence of a liquid when loading a tank causes additional electrostatic charge generation, and a spark may occur between the pipe and the rising liquid. Extending the line to the bottom of the tank will help to avoid static splashing, thus reducing the probability of having ignition sources within the tank. #hydrocarbon #tank #storagetank #safety #electrostati

Vacuum Damage in Storage Tanks Vacuum collapse causes many accidents involving equipment with low pressure ratings such as atmospheric storage tanks. One of the more common accidents involving atmospheric storage tanks, road tankers (tank trucks), and other low pressure equipment is vacuum collapse under external pressure. These accidents result either from failure to recognize the hazard, or from failure to provide sufficient relief capacity to maintain the internal pressure above the maximum allowable vacuum capability of the equipment. The principle means of protecting equipment against vacuum collapse is relatively simple provide sufficient gas or vapor to replace the volume of any liquid withdrawn plus any vapor condensed to keep the minimum pressure in the equipment within acceptable limits. Vacuum collapse hazards: There are some common sources of vacuum other than those purposely used for process reasons such as blowers, eductors, fans, vacuum pumps, etc. These vacuum sources are liquids pumped or drained from the tank, ambient cooling of gas in the upper space of tank, and vapor condensed inside the tank.
