Another month, another milestone for EVs 🔋🚗 While demand for vehicles shrank in October, EVs charged ahead. UK carmakers sold a remarkable 29,800 electric cars—that’s a 25% increase over last year. Even better? UK new car buyers have a choice of more than 125 different models, and one in five BEV models now costs less than the average petrol or diesel car, thanks to generous manufacturer discounts. Here's my summary of the latest SMMT EV figures.
💡 According to the latest figures from the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT), new battery electric vehicle (BEV) sales were up 24.5% in October compared to the same month in 2023. As such, BEVs made up 20.7% of all new cars registered in October. 🚗 ⚡ 299,733 fully electric cars have been registered so far in 2024, representing 18.1% of all new car sales, and an extensive model choice is helping drive this uptake. New car buyers in the UK currently have more than 125 different BEV models to choose from; this is an uplift of 38% over the last 10 months. Prices are coming down too, with roughly one in five BEV models now having a lower purchase price than the average petrol or diesel car. It’s not just new EVs which are driving EV adoption though, as used BEV sales climbed 57.0% in Q3, to represent their largest recorded market share at 2.7%, demonstrating just how popular pre-loved EVs are becoming. Despite declining private demand, the UK's new car market continued its growth streak for the 21st consecutive month in April, with registrations up by 1.0%. The rise was primarily driven by fleet registrations, which accounted for over 60% of all new cars registered, while private buyer uptake fell by 17.7%. Electrified vehicles, particularly battery electric vehicles (BEVs), played a significant role in market expansion, with BEV uptake rising by 10.7% and market share reaching 16.9%, although urgent action is needed to stimulate private buyer interest in switching to electric. As news is released today that the UK is out of recession it's also good to read about our home-grown automotive sector doing well with new car registrations up again for the 21st consecutive month. However, the challenge is still on to find the right incentives to encourage the purchase of BEV's for both domestic and commercial customers/vehicles. We are also still significantly challenged by the limited charging infrastructure which is hindering in particular the uptake of EV's in the commercial vehicle market. Read on for the feedback on these topics from the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) released today. https://bit.ly/3y8rHjQ

Slow and steady progress but a lot more to come. So the latest vehicle registration data is out and the headline the main news channels are throwing out is new car sales are down for the first time in two years. But there is a little bit of insight into what is coming. Just over 22% of new vehicles in August were full electric vehicles. The year to date figure was pushed up slightly to 17.2% which is predicted to rise to 18.5% by the end of the year. But if you look at some of the car sales figures you will see some of the new names gaining pace such as BYD. They sold 438 cars in August this year. That is nothing compared to the likes of VW with nearly 8000 vehicles in one month. But when you take into consideration BYD only sold 33 cars last August their growth is pretty good impressive. With SAIC owners of MG saying they will be selling vehicles with Solid State batteries towards the end of next year, you have to wonder what that will do to sales, especially when you could have an EV with a range between 400 and 800 miles and only takes 10 - 20 minutes to charge 80%. https://lnkd.in/eh8jc9hf #ElectricVehicles #EV #BEV #carsales #carregistrations #BYD #EVCharging

New car market holds steady as fleets drive growth - New car registrations up 1.7% in May in 22nd consecutive month of growth. - Battery electric vehicle (BEV) market share rises to 17.6% in the month and 16.1% YTD. - Retail BEV uptake declines less than overall private market as manufacturers subsidise ongoing transition. https://lnkd.in/e_t3XgeC

One million electric cars sold in the UK since 2002 The UK registered its one millionth electric car last month, despite a big drop in sales, new figures suggest. New EV registrations by private buyers fell by a quarter in January, threatening to undermine the UK's net zero promises. Overall new car sales to private customers fell by 16% in the same period, the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) said. The figures have sparked more calls for tax cuts to boost uptake among buyers. More than 20,000 battery electric cars (BEVs) were registered in January, up by a fifth year on year and helped by generous tax incentives for company car users. It means that since 2002, one million of these cars have reached the road. Fleet buyers - companies purchasing more than 25 units in one go - have been entirely behind the increase, with demand for BEVs growing by more than 40%. But falling private registrations mean electric cars accounted for 14% of new vehicles sold in the UK in January - below the 2023 figure of 16.5%. https://lnkd.in/eruyFTKH
