It's Armed Forces Day today - a time to honour and support the men and women of the armed forces, including troops, veterans, reservists, cadets, and their families. It's an opportunity for everyone to show appreciation for their sacrifices and contributions. Businesses can play a positive role in supporting the armed forces community by joining the Armed Forces Covenant and the Defence Employer Recognition Scheme. As signatories and members of both these schemes, we at Buckinghamshire Business First can attest to their value. A little about each scheme: The Armed Forces Covenant ensures fair treatment for those who serve and their families. It relies on support from people, communities, and businesses across the UK. The Defence Employer Recognition Scheme encourages employers to support defence efforts, offering Bronze, Silver, and Gold awards for organisations that advocate for the armed forces community. BBF signed the Armed Forces Covenant in June 2023 and has since become a Bronze award member of the Defence Employer Recognition Scheme. We pledge to support employees who are members of the armed forces community and have an accessible recruitment process that is open to reservists, veterans, cadet instructors, and military spouses/partners. Organisations can tailor their pledges to include actions such as: - Supporting the employment of veterans - Guaranteeing interviews for veterans. - Supporting employees in reserve forces. - Offering support to local cadet units. - Providing discounts to armed forces community members. - Supporting self-employment for veterans, spouses, or reservists. - Offering flexible leave for service spouses and partners.
