Scientists from Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS-DOST) explore two earthquakes that occurred near the Philippine island of Palawan in June. Palawan is considered a stable part of the seismically active country, so these events highlight the need to reassess hazards posed by earthquakes. https://lnkd.in/gsnpBeKR

In Ethiopia's Afar region, hundreds of residents are fleeing their homes amid fears of a potential volcanic eruption. On January 3, 2025, at about 17:00 local time (14:00 GMT), Mount Dofan emitted a significant plume of smoke described as fiery. In the weeks leading up to this event, the region experienced over a dozen seismic activities ( with a magnitude of 4.3 to 5.1 on Richter scale) raising concerns among residents about the potential eruptions and prompting evacuation efforts. Ethiopia is located in the plate tectonic scheme, where the Arabian plate has begun to move away from the African plate. Ethiopia also happens to be the only place in the world where continental lithosphere is splitting away from continental lithosphere and the beginning of sea-floor spreading can be seen on land. Mount Dofan is located on the margins of the main Ethiopian rift and that of southern Afar. The volcanoes are young, around 2 million years old and maybe connected to the rift margin faulting. Seismic activities which are caused by the tectonic activity on the rift valley might trigger volcanic eruption. The figure below is a Digital Elevation Map of the western margin of Afar from GeoMap App.

Is there any web site or app which gives Exact time (in UTC) and date of Volcanic eruption. most site do not give time . Unfortunately, our Seismology and plate tectonics have taught us ,repeatedly, that the quakes and Eruptions can not be predicted and the time of Eruptions is of no importance looking at millions of years of plate tectonics Pl suggest,if any

Volcano erupts on Iceland’s Reykjanes Peninsula, state of emergency declared The authorities have evacuated the town of Grindavik STOCKHOLM, May 29/ A state of emergency has been declared after a volcanic eruption occurred on the Reykjanes Peninsula, Icelandic broadcaster RUV reported. According to it, the National Commissioner of the Icelandic Police in coordination with the peninsula’s police chief decided to declare a state of emergency. The eruption began at 12:46 p.m. local time. The authorities have evacuated the town of Grindavik. Since the end of October, 24,000 seismic tremors have been recorded on the peninsula, the magnitude of the strongest reaching 5.2. This indicates a high probability of a volcanic eruption in the region. There are 33 active volcanic systems on the territory of Iceland. Since 2021, several eruptions have occurred on the Reykjanes Peninsula: in March 2021, in August 2022, in July 2023, and in January and March 2024. #business #finance #financialservices

Kanlaon’s Fiery Mood: When the Philippines’ Volcano Roars What would you do if you woke up one morning to the smell of sulphur in the air? For about 300 residents near the majestic Kanlaon Volcano, that's the reality! These folks have been evacuated as a precaution after Kanlaon decided to crank up its daily sulphur dioxide emissions to almost 10,000 tonnes – the highest ever recorded! With schools and tourist spots temporarily closed, farmers who live near the foot of the volcano have been smelling that “fresh” volcanic air (yikes!). 🌱 The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology isn’t kidding around, warning about possible eruptive unrest and dangers like red-hot ash clouds and flying projectiles. 🚀 Kanlaon has a bit of a history, too – 15 eruptions in 9 years! Let's hope she stays calm, but in the meantime, the local community is pulling together, proving that resilience is part of the landscape in the Ring of Fire. 🔥 Stay safe out there, and let’s hope the only thing erupting in our lives is some good vibes! #KanlaonVolcano #StaySafe #VolcanoLife #RingOfFire #NaturalPhenomena #Resilience #NegrosIsland #EmergencyPreparedness #SulphurStory

Join us online via Zoom on Friday 7th June 2024 at 18.00 BST for our next free evening lecture by Rebecca Williams from the University of Hull who will speak about 'Catastrophic Volcanic Flows - Understanding Pyroclastic Density Currents'. Pyroclastic density currents are flows of searing hot gas, ash and rocks that swoop down the sides of a volcano during the most violent eruptions. They can travel at speeds of up to 450 mph and can be as hot as 1000°C. Historically, they have been responsible for over 90,000 deaths – they are one of the most deadly volcanic phenomena. In order to try and reduce the risk to people from these hazardous flows, we strive to understand how they behave. However, they are very difficult to observe. Even small flows are hidden in a cloud of ash. The largest types of these currents however, have not been observed at all, and no instrument exists that can be deployed (and survive) to record them. In this lecture, Rebecca Williams will discuss the recent advances in this field and whether we’re any closer to understanding these deadly volcanic flows. The talk will be via Zoom. Members will receive an access code via email before the meeting. Non-members should telephone 020 7434 9298 or email the Secretary (sarah@geologistsassociation.org.uk) for details.

Scientists from the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS-DOST) explore a series of earthquakes that struck on or near the island of Mindanao in 2023 and early 2024, in Temblor's latest. The team considers whether some events were triggered by prior ones, and they dive into the history of seismicity in this restive region. https://lnkd.in/gJtimR9v
