𝐂𝐚𝐫𝐞𝐞𝐫 𝐒𝐞𝐥𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐢𝐧 𝐆𝐫𝐚𝐝𝐞 𝟗𝐭𝐡 & 𝟏𝟎𝐭𝐡 𝐥𝐨𝐨𝐤𝐬 𝐞𝐚𝐫𝐥𝐲 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐬𝐨𝐦𝐞 𝐬𝐭𝐮𝐝𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐬 & 𝐩𝐚𝐫𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐬…. 𝐁𝐮𝐭, 𝐭𝐡𝐚𝐭’𝐬 𝐍𝐎𝐓 𝐓𝐑𝐔𝐄… When students are young around the age of 13 years, their mind is very curious and open to explore and learn new things. They have an eagerness to understand different careers from the work nature point of view rather than the money and stability aspect of a career selection. This nature differentiates them from the students in grade 12th who are at the edge and just need some quick-fix solution that can help them make a career for themselves along with it being a money-making machine. Grade 12th students are focusing on where next to go for studies (college selection) and are trying to maximize their marks for safe admission. The situation becomes even worse for graduates, who are dying to get a job immediately after completing graduation or preparing for higher education… I have counselled students who have completed their masters and they said, “I do not want to make a career in this field. Please suggest to me something else except… (their chosen subject)”. To save students from these situations, where they choose careers based on their favourite subject or what their friends want or what looks financially rewarding, prestigious, and trending….. I STRONGLY suggest: Going for career guidance & assessments at as early as grade 9th & 10th. Find out about your personality, interests, values, skills and abilities. Research for careers that fit into your parameters. Do some short courses and industry interaction. Do research on different educational paths, entrances and colleges to study the required courses for that career… 𝐏𝐥𝐚𝐧 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐰𝐚𝐥𝐤 𝐲𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐂𝐀𝐑𝐄𝐄𝐑 𝐉𝐎𝐔𝐑𝐍𝐄𝐘 𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐫 𝐭𝐡𝐚𝐧 𝐩𝐢𝐜𝐤𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐬𝐭𝐨𝐧𝐞𝐬 𝐫𝐚𝐧𝐝𝐨𝐦𝐥𝐲 𝐚𝐬 𝐮 𝐠𝐞𝐭 𝐚𝐥𝐨𝐧𝐠 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐰𝐚𝐲… 𝐌𝐲 𝐌𝐈𝐒𝐒𝐈𝐎𝐍: “𝐻𝑒𝑙𝑝𝑖𝑛𝑔 𝑠𝑡𝑢𝑑𝑒𝑛𝑡𝑠 𝑜𝑓 𝑔𝑟𝑎𝑑𝑒 9𝑡ℎ-12𝑡ℎ 𝑑𝑖𝑠𝑐𝑜𝑣𝑒𝑟 𝑡ℎ𝑒𝑖𝑟 𝑏𝑒𝑠𝑡-𝑓𝑖𝑡 𝑐𝑎𝑟𝑒𝑒𝑟, 𝑠𝑡𝑟𝑒𝑎𝑚, 𝑠𝑢𝑏𝑗𝑒𝑐𝑡𝑠 & 𝑐𝑜𝑢𝑟𝑠𝑒𝑠 𝑡ℎ𝑟𝑜𝑢𝑔ℎ 𝑎𝑠𝑠𝑒𝑠𝑠𝑚𝑒𝑛𝑡𝑠, 𝑖𝑛𝑑𝑖𝑣𝑖𝑑𝑢𝑎𝑙 𝑐𝑜𝑢𝑛𝑠𝑒𝑙𝑙𝑖𝑛𝑔 𝑠𝑒𝑠𝑠𝑖𝑜𝑛𝑠 & 𝑖𝑛𝑑𝑢𝑠𝑡𝑟𝑦 𝑒𝑥𝑝𝑜𝑠𝑢𝑟𝑒, 𝑤𝑎𝑙𝑘𝑖𝑛𝑔 𝑡ℎ𝑒 𝑐𝑎𝑟𝑒𝑒𝑟 𝑗𝑜𝑢𝑟𝑛𝑒𝑦 𝑤𝑖𝑡ℎ 𝑐𝑙𝑎𝑟𝑖𝑡𝑦, 𝑐𝑜𝑛𝑓𝑖𝑑𝑒𝑛𝑐𝑒 & 𝑐𝑜𝑚𝑚𝑖𝑡𝑚𝑒𝑛𝑡”. APPLYING FOR CHEVENING? Your experience with Chevening will be highly individual and subjective, unique to your background and context. You may seem like the perfect candidate, but because of how Chevening evaluates applicants, you could still lose out. This is the strength of the Chevening process—it’s designed to uncover the potential that aligns with their criteria, not just the obvious choice. Here are some key tips that can help aspiring scholars: 1) Reflect deeply on your decision to pursue a master’s degree in the UK. There are other study options available globally, so you need to have a solid reason for choosing the UK beyond the fact that it’s a great opportunity for your career. Consider how studying in the UK connects to the field you’re in and whether there are any firms, organizations, or professionals there that would enrich your work experience or research. 2) Be intentional about what you want to study. While you don’t need to pursue the same field as your first degree, your proposed course of study should align with your professional experience. Chevening rarely sponsors ‘experiments’—your academic and career goals must be purposeful and well-thought-out. Ensure your choice of study has relevance not only to you but also to the field at large. Consider any gaps in the field that you wish to address and how your education will help fill them. 3) Focus on impact. Chevening scholars are known for their positive influence and commitment to making a difference. They are driven by a sense of purpose that goes beyond personal gain. When applying, always remember your “why”—the motivation behind your actions—and how you can use your skills to create a broader impact in your community, your field, and the world. #IAmChevening #ChosenforChevening #CheveningScholarship Chevening Awards
