We work hard to protect the communities we serve from environmental hazards while ensuring that everyone receives the services they need to stay healthy, and in some cases, providing those services ourselves, and everything in-between. However, behind our idealistic endeavors that keep us motivated, we must accomplish our mission, regardless of the ever-changing political climate while competing for limited resources to achieve our goals and objectives. #NEWS Public Health Wales has announced that it will focus its research onto six priority areas, to coincide with the long term strategy and Research and Evaluation strategy it launched last year. Reimagining Public Health: Mapping A Path Forward The COVID-19 pandemic and other public health challenges have exposed weaknesses in the US public health system, highlighting the need for transformation. This moment calls for advancing beyond Public Health 3.0 by integrating lessons from the pandemic and focusing on three main areas: 1. **Contextual Focus**: Increase accountability and address politicization and polarization. 2. **Topical Focus**: Prioritize climate change and enhance efforts towards equity. 3. **Technical Focus**: Advance data sciences, build the public health workforce, and improve communication capacity. Transforming the public health system requires strong leadership, targeted funding, and a combination of bottom-up and top-down strategies. If you work in #publichealth and are looking for inspiration for the days and years ahead, I highly suggest the watching yesterday's Bloomberg American Health Summit 2024. I especially liked Rosa DeLauro's heartfelt and common sense thoughts, starting around 2:25:00. She included words like -- building laboratory capacity, fighting cuts to public health, advocacy over partisanship, investments in core public health efforts, growing the public health workforce, and the idea that good data and good personnel are essential. The theme for #APHA2024 this year is “Rebuilding Trust in Public Health and Science.” “Public health is inherently future-focused, looking toward prevention and promotion to enable populations to live longer, healthier lives. But recent political polarization, underfunding and distrust of scientific research threaten our ability to create optimal, equitable health and well-being for all. The promise and effectiveness of public health is challenged by pseudoscience. Given this discord, we need to rebuild trust in #publichealth and #science.” - American Public Health Association
