I always talk to our carriers and shippers about creating a culture that supports each other and helps each other win. You know, true partnerships. Yesterday I was working with a new carrier to our network trying to reposition their truck from NV/CA to TX. We did not have a shipment for them, but we did have a TX shipment that they wanted. The dispatcher asked if I could help her with booking a shipment from a different broker as she was in the truck driving and could not search the load boards. I obliged and we got on a conference call together and called on a few loads. We made 3 calls to 3 different brokers...... (1 small and 2 large companies) As a freight broker myself, I was embarrassed by what I experienced and heard on the phone. Few observations: 1. No one let me know their names. 2. 2 spoke so fast and with such disinterest in their voice that it made it seem as though I was a bother. 3. Hold time (Small broker 2 minutes, large brokers 14 minutes and 17 minutes) 4. If these were all "Carrier Sales" roles, not a single person was interested in selling and/or growing their carrier network 5. The largest broker did not follow up via email or phone yesterday (still hasn't in fact. I checked this morning) It's no wonder why carriers do not like dealing some freight brokers. Do you have a good telephone manner? 🤗 It’s not always possible to see your customers and especially when they need support, they want it quickly and will turn to the telephone ☎ The way you represent yourself and your company should be no different than if you were standing in front of them 😸😺 Your body language, the tone of your voice and the words you choose should be the same 💯 By smiling as you introduce yourself, you let your customers know you’re happy to hear from them and they have your undivided attention 😊 They may not be able to see your smile, but they’ll know you’re smiling 😉 Tell them you’re taking notes as they explain what they need so they know you’re listening 👂👂 Repeat back key points to check you’ve understood, your customers will know you care and want to assist them ❤ If you’re not able to help right away and need to call them back, do so in a timely manner. Over the last 6 yrs, I've recruited agents that weren't a good fit. Signs that a new freight agent may not work out: Customers don’t follow as promised. Poor Communication/ slow responses. Negative Attitude Fails to take accountability.
