Virtual care is no longer the future – it’s the present. The recent New York Times opinion piece by Helen Ouyang, MD, MPH highlights the transformative potential of telehealth in reimagining healthcare: “Telemedicine is not about replacing doctors but about making their expertise more accessible.” At Wheel, we see this transformation every day across tens of thousands of patients. Virtual care isn’t just a convenience; it’s a lifeline, enhancing access and outcomes for patients and providers. It isn’t about replacing in-person care – it’s augmenting it by breaking barriers and improving efficiency. But for this vision to be fully realized, we need to move beyond the “pandemic pivot” mindset. Virtual care must be integrated seamlessly into our healthcare systems, supported by thoughtful policy and robust technology.
100% — the world was thrown into telemedicine without choice during the pandemic. Clinicians and patients who swore they’d forever avoid it were forced to use imperfect telehealth platforms with frustrating results. Most institutions didn’t even have protocols for virtual care. In short, it wasn’t done properly. Done properly, virtual health is the future. Handheld devices like MedWand allow actual vitals and medical exams during video visits. Asynchronous care is increasing. Smartphone usage increases annually worldwide. Virtual care isn’t just a bubble born out of the pandemic — it’s a technological inflection point that will change the future of healthcare forever. That’s why my team and I are building something big in this space. Exciting times for anyone who can see over the horizon.
This is spot on! I have observed the expansion of virtual care personally and with my clients. It is not going anywhere. In addition I see the expansion of delivery of care at the convenience of the end user - at home or in office.
Virtual care is truly a game-changer. How do you see it evolving to address current barriers in healthcare integration and policy?
Totally agree , Virtual care isn’t just about convenience it’s about equity. By connecting patients to international expertise at lower costs, we can bring high-quality care to underserved communities. It also scales to meet the demand of growing populations with limited services, creating a more balanced and inclusive healthcare system. The potential here is transformative!
“Telemedicine is not about replacing doctors but about making their expertise more accessible” Such a great quote. Its all about ACCESS!
