#CyberDiplomacy Three decades ago, cyber-diplomacy did not exist. The interest in Information and Communication Technology as a vector of change in international relations was limited to a few mostly technical organisations, and a restricted number of states. The late 1990s saw a growing interest on the topic, but we would have to wait almost a decade before states started to fully grasp the challenges and opportunities brought by the formation of this new policy domain. https://lnkd.in/dMaxKBns

https://lnkd.in/d4hsMuJT China’s Cops Are Coming to a City Near You Its international policing activities are growing. That’s turning the country into a global security power. November 11, 2024 at 8:00 PM GMT+1 By Karishma Vaswani China’s international policing activities are increasing in size and scope, particularly in the Global South. This risks giving the world’s second-largest economy more influence in nations where it’s already forging ahead through diplomacy and economic relationships. It’s a worrying trend, especially as Washington — with President-elect Donald Trump running things from next year — and Beijing jostle for leadership in the developing world. These security operations are helping the Communist Party protect its interests abroad, a new report from the International Institute for Strategic Studies shows, while promoting Beijing’s image as a responsible security player. China is doing this, the report adds, through the export of technology, and the integration of technicians into the security agencies of foreign countries, providing Beijing with vital intelligence opportunities.

🔒🌍 Security and Privacy Concerns for Political Figures: A Delicate Balance In the realm of political diplomacy, security and privacy are paramount. A recent video shows French President Emmanuel Macron refusing a PCR test during his visit to Russian President Vladimir Putin, citing concerns about potential DNA collection. This incident highlights the intricate balance political figures must maintain between diplomatic protocols and personal security measures. From a security perspective, this situation underscores several critical points: 1️⃣ Privacy and Data Security* 🔍 - High-profile individuals, especially political leaders, must be vigilant about their personal data. DNA samples can expose sensitive medical information, if misused, could pose significant security risks. 2️⃣ Risk Assessment ⚖️ - Security teams must conduct thorough risk assessments of all procedures, including medical tests, to identify potential threats and vulnerabilities. 3️⃣ Protocol Adaptation 📋 - Diplomatic visits often involve specific protocols. It is crucial for security details to adapt and negotiate these protocols while ensuring the principal's security and privacy. 4️⃣ Trust and Diplomacy 🌐 - Balancing security concerns with diplomatic relations requires a nuanced approach. Building trust while safeguarding privacy is essential for maintaining effective international relationships. 5️⃣ 5. Contingency Planning 🚨 - Security teams should develop contingency plans for situations where standard protocols might pose security risks. This includes negotiating alternatives that uphold both security and diplomatic requirements. ❓ How do you balance the need for rigorous security measures with the diplomatic protocols and privacy concerns of political figures? #Security #PoliticalFigures #Privacy #DataSecurity #Diplomacy #RiskAssessment #InternationalRelations #CloseProtection 🛡️🌍🚔 🎥 All rights and credits are reserved to respective owners

My second article with The Viyug in the series on Information warfare in the Russia-Ukraine war. In this piece, I have focused on China's persuasion in Moscow's propaganda campaign.

🌍 Exploring the EU's Evolving Security Role: Insights from Non-EU Partners and Candidates 🌍 Two weeks ago, I had the opportunity to attend an engaging roundtable discussion titled "EU’s Changed Security Perspective: Perspectives from Non-EU Partners and Candidate Countries." Hosted by Dr. Seda Gürkan (ISGA, Leiden University), this event shed light on the EU's transformation from a soft power to a geopolitical actor and its implications for global security. The discussion brought together esteemed diplomats: H.E. Beti Jacheva, Ambassador of the Republic of North Macedonia H.E. Corinne Cicéron Bühler, Ambassador of Switzerland Pinar Kayseri ,Minister-Counsellor, Embassy of Türkiye Simon Collard-Wexler, Political Director, Embassy of Canada Together, they explored how the EU's security strategies, including the Common Security and Defence Policy (CSDP), are perceived by non-EU countries. With diverse political, economic, and regional ties, these nations provided unique perspectives on European security challenges and opportunities, particularly in the wake of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. The dialogue emphasized: 🔹 The expectations and challenges non-EU countries face concerning the EU's evolving security role. 🔹 Reactions to the EU's shift towards a more proactive geopolitical stance. This event highlighted the importance of understanding diverse perspectives to build a more assertive, inclusive approach to regional and global security. #EU #GlobalSecurity #Diplomacy #Geopolitics #CSDP #EuropeanSecurity #InternationalRelations #LeidenUniversity #IR
