During my first week as a communications intern with the Georgia Forestry Commission, my boss, Howard Bennett, who, by the way, was one of the most incredibly kind, witty, smart and talented leaders and human beings I've ever known, told me to start a folder and keep it with me for the rest of my career. "In it," he said, "I want you to keep anything nice that anyone ever says about you and your work. That way, when you're old like me and your career has been reduced to a collection of broad brushstrokes that lack fine detail, you'll be able to recall specific instances of something you did that mattered to someone. This will be important to the future you." Since that day in the fall of 1988, I still have that dog-eared and well-worn manila folder with me, where I keep note cards, printed emails, photos, Post-it notes and any other proof that someone appreciated something I did. A few of the more recent ones, pictured here, I keep on my desk before they get tucked into my folder. It's a nice way to start the day by looking at a few cherished words from clients and partners and friends before I dive into the daily vortex of crap that is all our jobs now. I mention this because, next week, I'm joining an esteemed list of internal comms acolytes for an hour-long session on The Value of Gratitude and Pride, hosted by WorkProud and Jason Etter. We'll talk about the power of employee recognition, both formal and informal, and the profoundly enduring effect it can have on both the company and the people who work there. I hope you'll join us. Whether you're the CEO of a Fortune 10 global behemoth or a wet-behind-the-ears communications intern writing articles for a forestry magazine, everyone needs to feel appreciated for what they do by those they do it for. A 36-year-old manila folder is all the proof I need to know how true that is. [registration link in the first comment]

Dream job alert: Wombat Walker. I quit. This is my real calling... 🐨 While this is clearly a fantastic PR stunt to get people excited about nature, these wild jobs already exist: Manatee Marketer - Runs social media campaigns for manatee Gorilla Gamifier - Develops games to raise awareness for gorillas Parrot Paralegal - Specializes in wildlife trafficking law for parrots Tiger Treasurer - Manages funding for tiger conservation projects Dolphin Designer - Creates digital content for marine conservation Cheetah Consultant - Advises on human-wildlife conflict resolution Badger Bookkeeper - Tracks expenses for wildlife corridor projects Platypus Publicist - Handles PR for freshwater ecosystem protection Elephant Economist - Analyzes financial impacts of illegal ivory trade Seahorse Steward - Preserves seagrass habitats for seahorse species Might not always have such cool names (which is a shame☝️), but they are out there. 🚨 Misconception alert There is a big misconception out there that you can only get involved in nature if you have an ecology degree. Good news, that's not the case. Nature NGOs or biodiversity businesses need diverse teams too. They need accountants, marketer, lawyers, developers & co. 👉 To help you in this transition, I put all my experience into our 2.5h online video course & workstation, "How to get a nature job in 2024". Just click on "Visit my website" to get started. Ready to join us? So that soon you can change your job title to: Condor Caretaker, Wombat Walker or Butterfly Booster... Just imagine. P.S. My #Explanations #underscore the point that while good #forestry #legislation is necessary, it is obviously not sufficient. The laws in many countries lie unused or underused for reasons like failure of political will, weak #institutions, or even general disregard for the rule of law. I have filed #multiple #appeals and have a few senate and congressional heads to show the #consequences to the voters and public of obstruction behavior by our state and federal governments not respecting scientific evidence or facts ! The #lobbyists and other #enforcement mechanisms in our public interest must be modernized, traditional U.S. #constitutional #interpretation of #law has stymied or undermined scientific based #legislative #processes. Not listening to the #scientific #community or the experts in their respective fields of knowledge and understanding. The #evidence is this is overwhelming based a combination of #republican supported #bills. The #environmental #law #firms and #environmental #attorneys in each state also are working on multiple undecided cases that our #supreme #court’s not #hearing yet ? This is what constitutes #unconstitutional #hypocrisy !
