Over the past 4 months I had the opportunity to co-develop the National Youth Advisory Group of the U.S. Interagency Council on Homelessness (USICH) National Youth Homelessness Partnership, which is a group of 15 young adults across the country with lived expertise in youth & young adult homelessness and professional expertise doing systems change work on the local, state, and national level. We developed the recruitment and onboarding process and the interviewing of 96 young adults. This week I was privileged to have the opportunity to co-moderate a 3 day National Youth Homelessness Partership Convening with Dr. Alex Wagaman. We had a room full of Federal, national, and young adult partners who came with the mutual commitment to co-develop a plan to address youth homelessness in the nation. During our time we radically imagined what our collective priorities could be and began, what I forsee in the future, a strong partnership and commitment to addressing youth homelessness. We know that change and developing partnerships take work and that it means we must also sit in principle struggle with one another. We also know that discomfort is necessary in the growth process. I was so proud to see the young leaders boldly and shamelessly show up with unwavering passion, commitment, and knowledge. I couldn't help but smile from ear to ear seeing them in action. I love that I can be a catalyst for them and support them in any way that I can so that their voices, expertise, and knowledge can be lifted. SN: Imagine a group picture of national, federal, and young adult professionals with lived expertise. 😂😂😂 Waiting for photo consent. . . . #systemschange #partnerships #national #federal #nationalplan #socialimpact #transformational #professionalswithlivedexpertise #socialjustice #collectiveaccountability

On this Juneteenth, let's not forget that due to racism in our criminal justice, education, employment, housing, and other systems, combined with the lasting effects of chattel slavery, Black Americans disproportionately experience homelessness in our communities. It is 100% systemic that Black Americans are: * 3x as likely as the general population to become homeless; * 2.5x as likely as their White counterparts to experience poverty; * 5.4x as likely as Whites to become incarcerated; * 2x as likely to be unemployed; * ~50% as likely as White people to have a college degree; * on average likely to have about one-tenth the wealth of White households. Thank you, National Alliance to End Homelessness, for being forthright about this reality. It certainly remains true four years later. https://lnkd.in/gH9YjD7Q #juneteenth #neighborhoodhandscommunity

A housing strategy for vulnerable young people is a must do in BC.
We are grateful to The Vancouver Sun for publishing this Opinion piece today. We feel strongly and passionately that a strategy to address youth homelessness will change the face of our society. "Without a dedicated youth housing strategy, young people in care are being pulled down a path to homelessness and further into a cycle of life-altering crises — facing issues like problematic substance use, interactions with the criminal justice system, and even losing custody of their own children." - Jacqueline Dupuis and Sarah Stewart Please share this post as we head to the ballot box. https://lnkd.in/gQX4S_KX #HousinginBC #bcPoli #YouthHousing #YouthHousingStrategy #SocialPurposeHousing #BCElection #PRforGood #PRforSocialChange #SocialPurposePR

At Larkin Street Youth Services, we stand at the forefront of addressing the complex issue of youth homelessness in San Francisco and beyond. A comprehensive report on homelessness service providers in California published yesterday by the Terner Center for Housing Innovation at UC Berkeley sheds light on critical areas, affirming our strategies and inspiring further innovation in our approach. Key takeaways from the report include: + Navigating Funding Landscape: The importance of stable, flexible funding to allow for innovation and support essential administrative functions. + Staffing Challenges: The critical need for competitive wages and support for workforce development to attract and retain dedicated staff. + Addressing Complex Needs: The necessity for resources to support mental health and substance use challenges, highlighting the effectiveness of trauma-informed care. + Collaborative Efforts: The power of partnerships and community support in enhancing our services and reaching more young people in need. These insights reinforce the path Larkin Street is on, underscoring the significance of our community's support, the ingenuity of our team, and the impact of our partnerships. We are reminded that our collective action can transform the lives of young people experiencing homelessness, providing them with the hope and opportunities they deserve. There is a link to the full report in the comments below, so you can download to learn more about the state of homelessness services and how you can contribute to making a difference. Let's continue to work together, inspired by the lessons learned and motivated by the opportunities ahead. #EndYouthHomelessness #CommunityImpact #InnovativeSolutions

🛑 Did you know that 90% of young people experiencing homelessness in New York City are youth of color? Systemic barriers like redlining, community disinvestment, and discrimination in the housing market are keeping young people from accessing safe, stable, healthy, and affordable homes. Even those who have housing assistance still face challenges leasing a suitable rental unit free from physical hazards, in neighborhoods that are safe and offer the amenities young people need. The CARES Initiative is calling for housing policies that break down these barriers and provide young people—especially Black and brown youth—with the stability they need to thrive.
