Opera One sperimenta l’esecuzione degli LLM in locale nel browser: Opera has announced the addition of experimental support for 150 local LLM (Large Language Model) variants from approximately 50 model families to their browser as part of the AI Feature Drops program. This marks the first time that local LLMs can be easily accessed and managed by a mainstream browser, providing a new integrated function. Users can find these models in the Opera One Developer stream. The use of these local LLMs means that user data is kept on their device, allowing them to utilize AI without sending information to a server. However, it's important to note that these experimental features may encounter issues and that the local LLMs may be slower than server-based ones due to hardware capabilities. Users are able to choose the model with which to process their input, providing early adopters with flexibility.

What is it about opera that elicits a visceral response for so many listeners? The key lies with specific frequencies in a singer’s voice, says William Beeman. To fill a large hall—and not be drowned out by an orchestra—the operatic voice must produce frequencies in the range of 2,800-3,200 hertz. These high frequencies—dubbed the singer’s formant—contribute to clarity, projection, and richness of sound. But they also appear to be essential to the conveyance of emotion, and are the primary source of that visceral response. Why? Because these are the frequencies that the human ear is most sensitive to. It's a sensitivity that likely evolved to aid in understanding emotions, intentions, and social cues, thus increasing the chance of survival. “Language itself is good at communicating information, but it is deficient in conveying affective states to others,” Beeman writes. Singing, then, evolved as a way to express one’s inner emotional state when language was insufficient. And when the listener hears these specific frequencies in the singer's voice, it triggers a response in the auditory system that activates the emotional centers of the brain. In essence, the visceral response to opera is a primal one. It bypasses the rational mind and speaks directly to our emotional brain, unlocking feelings waiting to be expressed.
